Combined MD/PhD vs Regular Md…?

I am new and just start AMCAS application. In the Medical School Program Type section, we can only select regular MD or Combined MD/PhD but not both. My question is: When you select MD/PhD, does it mean you also apply regular program and will automatically be considered by most school regular MD programs? In another words, if you are rejected by that school MD/PhD you are still on the application pool to be considered into regular MD.

Someone on board said that if your application for certain school MD/PhD rejected then their regular MD will not consider you. But others said that if you want to apply and get into MD/PhD you have to be accepted by regular MD first. Anyone could clear this…?

Btw, is anyone familiar with such situation with Harvard, UCSF, Stanford, UCLA?

My concern is I wish to get into MD/PhD program but if rejected it does not hurt my chance to get into their regular MD program.

Your response will be much appreciated.

I don't know about specific schools. I read on some websites that you will still be considered for the MD. You probably should check the website of each school you are applying to.

1) try posting this question in the md/phd forum

2) many schools will automatically consider you for md only if you are rejected from md/phd. HOWEVER this can sometimes put you at a disadvantage, because by the time your app is being considered for md, it's later in the cycle already. bottom line: select md/phd on AMCAS if that's what you want. lots of luck!

In general, yes. It is different for specific schools. I think some schools REQUIRE you do to just one. At some of the top tiers you are at a significant disadvantage for MD if you get rejected MD/PhD.

Do a search, this question has been asked many times before.

I was wondering the same when I was applying, as a result I applied to only 3 MD/PhD programs (UMASS, UIC, Dartmouth). 2 considered me for MD after MD/PhD rejection (UMASS's MD is in-state only). I ended up getting into UIC MD only (and PhD only). BUT I know for sure there are some schools that will not put you in their MD pool after MD/PhD rejection...I just don't know which.

Most schools will consider you for both, but your chances at MD are usually reduced.

For example, I was rejected MSTP at Umich in late december. At this point they put me into the MD applicant pool, and only 25 interview spots remained. Needless to say, I didn't get one of those slots. I would (most likely) have received an interview if they got my application in september when they received my application.

Hopkins almost never accepts people MD only if they get an MD/PhD rejection.

Form those four schools, you still have a chance at MD only at stanford. I forget what harvard does, and I didn't apply to any UC schools.

I applied MD/PhD to all four of those, so I'll just tell you my experience with their timing:

harvard didn't interview me for md/phd but did for MD, just later on in the cycle.

ucsf didn't interview me for md/phd but did for MD. They actually have the best way of reviewing apps, in my opinion. The MD-only committee must want to interview you before the md/phd committee looks at your application, so at the same time that I received my rejection from the md/phd, I received the interview offer for the med school. I therefore was able to interview early in the cycle and knew my status there by february.

stanford was like harvard, in that I received an MD-only interview offer later in the season.

ucla did interview me for md/phd, but rejected me for that program and I didn't hear about my MD-only status until maybe late April, when I was waitlisted. I think applying md/phd lowered my chances there for MD-only.

hope this helps

Just to add, even if Harvard interviews you for MD/PhD, during the interview you also interview with the MD program (at least one of their two programs). To get into the MD/PhD program, you have to be accepted to one of the MD programs (NP or HST), as well as the MD/PhD program itself. However, if the MD/PhD program doesn't offer you a position, the MD programs can still offer you positions.

Thanks for all your responses!

Can I say that the schools like Harvard with late decision (uaually April, 2010) will most likely not hurt your chances getting into MD only program if you are rejected by that school MD/PhD, and on other side schools like UCSF, UCLA with rolling or early decision (usually Nov 2009 - Feb 1010) do hurt your such chances...? Anyone with those experiences will be much appreciated.

Try the MD/PhD forum. There are a couple people in there who went to top tier MSTP programs.

At Penn, they will not consider your application for MD only if you apply MSTP. They won't even if you ask them to.
