I'm a MS-3 looking to get into research in the future (could be clinical, translational, or basic, no idea yet) and was wondering if there were any combined residency programs that also lead to the Ph.D. ?

I know UMass has something like this in internal medicine, which is what I am most interested in (ID to be specific) and was wondering if there were any more out there like this? It goes 2 years clinical, 3-4+ for research, then the rest of your specialty training if you plan to sub-specialize.

Thanks.

I haven't heard of these programs, but I'm a more junior poster, so tomorrow all the old fogies that have already gone to sleep can get on and answer your question.

But I would like to ask why you plan to follow this path? It seems at this point in your career more practical to do a residency and then a combined research/clinical fellowship. It pays a lot more, and you have fewer responsibilities (no courses, no TAing, no prelims, no dissertation, etc.). But I know nothing about these programs, so do enlighten me!

Yeah, I can help. Many integrated PhD granting programs are focused on clinical and translational research training, not basic science research. These programs have internal medicine residency offerings.

FYI: These are not ABIM Research Track programs per se. These are programs that specifically grant second terminal graduate degrees.

You can also look into doing fellowship although you won't get a Ph.D.

Those look pretty cool. I've also seen this one at U Colorado, which is famous for it's pulmonology training/care.
