OK, this may win the prize for the least intellectual thread in this forum, but I'm curious-- I'm going into 2nd year, so I guess I'll be doing a LOT of reading. And I don't really have a comfortable place to do it-- just a bed (don't want to use it for fear of falling asleep) and two standard-issue dorm chairs.

One problem is that I live in a dorm, so I don't have room for a couch or anything. But does anyone have a good "studying chair" they'd recommend? I like to curl up with my legs in the chair to read, so I was thinking of a papasan chair, but I haven't been able to find a sturdy wicker one (Target has some, but they're flimsy and not very comfy). Where do people find furniture anyway? 😕

Guess I may just keep an eye out for a "for sale" sign around school. And hopefully I won't be spending *all* my time in my dorm room when I'm studying! But still, any ideas? Moderately inexpensive is always good! 😀

Personally, I like to study at a desk to avoid falling asleep, so I just went down to Office Max and sat on all the chairs that were in my low price range and picked the most comfy one.

I got a good papasan chair at Pier 1 once, so you might check there if thats what you want. Other than that www.craigslist.org is always a good place to find people's unwanted furniture for cheap.

I bought papasan chair recently from Pier 1 Imports (bamboo one). It is super comfy and well built. I paid $85 (including cushion on sale), i think regular price is $100. Try looking on e-bay, they had the same papasan chairs for $40 including cushion, but the chairs were available for local pick up only. Maybe you'll get lucky and you'll find one in yr area. Good luck studying.

I saw some decent chairs down at Office Max, and one that was 39.00 and pretty comfortable. I study at the kitchen table so part of me is reluctant to have an "office" chair at the same table where I eat dinner but I might have to do it. My regular (awesome!) kitchen table chairs are taking a beating by having me sit in them for so many hours a day. They seem to lose a leg, and the screws come lose, I am not sure how as I am just sitting in them - not dancing or anything. But, I am like the OP, I am going into 2nd year and want comfort and durability. I normally prefer just solid wood kitchen chairs plus a nice cushion for my tushy. 🙂

I don't know what these chairs are called, but there are some awesome "egg-shaped" chairs. (If you watch Real World Austin, I think they have them). My friend did his undergrad at Oberlin, and they had these chairs in the library. They were white and looked like an egg, with an opening on one side. The inside was really comfortable, and the construction blocked out a lot of the ambient sound. I've never seen them for sale, though so I have no idea where to find them.

EDIT: Who knew googling "egg chair" would work? http://www.sixdifferentways.com/gallery/becg?page=1

I, personally, need the least comfortable chair EVER. It's my second day of med school and I was doing embryology reading on my bed (bad idea, I know, but I did it all through undergrad). 45 mins later I realized that my embryology reading had turned into a nice little nap (albeit in the fetal position, so I must have learned SOMETHING!).

the best seat is a bean bag. just throw that shiet on the floor.

Hahaha, you'll learn this quickly : studying + bed nearby = bad idea.

check out an ikea store if there is one nearby you or go to www.ikea.com. (I think the stores have more variety than the online verison)

they have amazing, cozy chairs that are perfect for snuggling in for a read for less than $100. I can't read on my bed or on a hard desk chair so I will definitely be investing in a comfy chair.

womb chairs! i went to oberlin for undergrad too, and our womb chairs are so famous 🙂 (they're a different color on every floor of mudd library, too) i warn you though, they're hard to study in -- not just because you fall asleep in them, but because they're so enclosed, it's really dark and hard to read in there! i speak from experience... womb chairs are much better for sleeping than for studying 🙂

Target has a black padded computer chair for $19.99 that is comfy but won't put you to sleep.

Since you asked.... hmm....

For the most wonderfully comfy chair in the world (for a price)... a Herman Miller Aeron Chair!

Check it out:

Ok, ok, so probably it is out of our current price range... but come 'on, your gluteals deserve it! Your erector spinae will thank you immensely. Buy one chair now and use it forever. A true ergonomically designed chair that lasts for 60 years for 600+buckaroos?... is it such a high price to pay for $~10 a year? ok.... probably is..... but maybe not....

just a thought...

Too much like a bed. Sleep inducing.

Honestly, you probably want the least comfortable chair you can find, so that you're not tempted to rest and possibly doze off.

Thanks, you all-- I hadn't heard of a lot of these chairs before-- the "womb chairs" especially look cool. And the $600 chairs sound really nice-- but unfortunately that's not in my budget for the near future!

I was glad to find that Pier One actually still makes papasan chairs (I couldn't seem to find them anywhere)-- I think that's probably what I'll end up going with-- hopefully it won't take up too much of my dorm room floor space.

On the comfy vs un-comfy debate, I realize that too comfy might lead to falling asleep-- but as I've recently found out, un-comfy leads to stiffness and muscle aches (for me at least, but I may be weird) that make me not want to sit and read anymore. So caffeine and comfy-ness it is! 😛
