Hi guys!
I was wondering if anyone can help me out with what to do to come back to California (my home) after residency.
I just found out yesterday I matched to new york family medicine and me being a carib grad won't help.
I am willing to go to any practice in california at any livable salary. All my life is here in cali, my family, my friends.
Will knowing spanish, getting board certified help? I have Ptal.

Thank you guys! I know this is a silly problem to have but it's all I can think about ever since I didn't match to CA programs.

Did you go to a Carib school that is recognized?
If not, you'll need to work for 2 years post-residency before you can apply for license.
A person I'm talking to was in similar situation. Has to work elsewhere for 2 years before moving to CA.

My school is one of 4 big ones, it works in california and on top of that, I have made sure all my rotations are california approved. I have applied for PTAL, where california medical board basically pre-approves you for a license. Legal part is complete.
I am just worried california is competitive and everyone wants to come here and they might not want someone from east coast residency.

You'll be fine.
Make connections. Cold calls.

There is a doctor shortage everywhere. I generally get 3 jobs on my email in California a day. It's just like anywhere else, you apply for the job you want. It's not that big of a deal.

Noticed you're an urgent care doc.... is it relatively easy to find these jobs in socal?

Fo shiz!
Get those offers too, especially the OC/Beverly Hills/LA. Too pricey.

Really good to hear. I've got my heart set on returning home to san diego. So any job between the border and san clemente would be absolutely amazing.

I think ideally stringing together a few jobs would be great..possibly doing a day or two a week somewhere more rural, perhaps in the desert.

If you are FM trained it is easy basically to get a job anywhere in the country. I recently came off locums after 5 years and now do exclusive urgent care but I still get job offers for everything: FM, UC, hospitalist, ER, etc.

I've always looked up to you on here...you're essentially living/working the exact way I want post residency.

Would you mind if I sent you a pm?

It's a silly problem because... it is not a problem at all.

As long as you can get licensure in California, you can work there. And if you already have a PTAL it is easier to get a license when you get to that stage. There are plenty of opportunities and openings.

Focus on doing well in your residency in New York so that you actually pass your board exams and learn what you need to become a good practitioner.

My urgent care I moonlight at has locations in SD and they're always hiring. PM me.

Kaiser is hiring like crazy. Not sure where that will be in 3 years but my guess is they will be. Start at $230k with full benefits.

I really think that when you're out of residency most employers won't care where you did your Med school.

Job that came over the wire today note it doesn't say anything about where you went to medical school or residency. :

Wow, these are really nice to see. For the large sign-on bonuses, I am wondering how long they are buying you for. I think you posted another offer earlier that was basically for a 5-year minimum through Kaiser that also had a large 0% loan that would be forgiven after five years? These are still impressive numbers, though.

From what I understand, some folks I know that spoke with or worked under Kaiser really liked what they offered.
