Is it pretty standard for most DO students to take both? I recently shadowed a couple of DO plastic surgeons who both went into an allopathic residency. One told me that there are just a few plastics spots for DOs (many more for MDs), but it's likely that more DO spots will be created. Either way, for anyone who took/is taking both tests, how hard is this to accomplish today? Are both USMLE and COMLEX really similar? Thanks for the input guys.

For the more competitive residency it behooves you to take the test to be compared on a more level playing field. Study materials are identical minus the savareese. Therefore if you are studying for both at the same time. There are differences in regards to USMLE being heavier on biostats and biochem. I thought the USMLE was a much more intuitive test. Take it.

Don't bet the ant farm on the opening of more DO plastics spots.

If you want to match into plastics do some research, smoke the usmle, land some killer letters, and blow em away during your away rotations. Than hang on tight because its gonna be a wild ride.

Well rumor has it that the osteopathic world is going to double the number of plastics fellowships this year. From 2 to 4!! Supposedly Grandview in Dayton and Doctor's in Columbus are trying to add a plastics fellowship. South Pointe in Cleveland and PCOM already have one.

Has anyone either taken a prep course of paid for the Qbank? Some students at MSUCOM are taking a prep course over spring break, just wondering if anyone tried either and if it was worthwhile?

At DMU-Com, we decided to go with Kaplan prep for COMLEX, but I am pretty sure that the preparation would be hauntingly similar for USMLE as well. As of now, we have access to both question banks.

As for taking the USMLE, I will probably take it this year after I take the COMLEX because I still have no clue as to what I want to do or what part of the country I will be in...

For anyone who has taken both tests, do you recommend taking the USMLE or COMLEX first? And since they are similar do you just schedual one a few days after the other while the information is still fresh in your mind, or would you recommend taking time off to regroup?

I am planning the COMLEX first and will take a a few weeks between because I need to beef up on genetics, stats, and biochem stuff. To each his/her own.

I am taking the USMLE May 22nd, and if need be I will taking the COMLEX in June w/everyone else.

I took the USMLE first last year, then brushed up on some anatomy, OMM, and micro before the COMLEX the following week. Worked out well for me. The COMLEX really burns you out...I couldn't study for like a week after it.
