COMLEX friendly allopathic rads

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why don't you just take the USMLE and put yourself on a level playing field with all of the strong MD applicants? I'll be the first to agree that board scores are not everything, but they can be used to set a minimum standard by which interviewees can be selected. I also would not put any faith in this COMLEX to USMLE conversion that other people have mentioned. If I was a program director, I would rather select from applicants who took a more familiar exam.

I think as a pd one would want to compare apples to apples so to speak. And in this competitive market there are enough people who have taken the USMLE that why bother paying attention to an applicant without USMLE scores . There are plenty of qualified applicants (DOs included) who took the USMLE. Unless you are a SUPERSTAR (ie the chairman's son or published ground breaking MRI research as a Phd in your former life), you are at a serious disadvantage.

I must protest. I am by no means a "superstar", yet I applied to the two allopathic radiology programs in my city. As a DO student, I reported only my Step 1 COMLEX scores (my school hasn't taken Step 2 yet). I have interviewed at both programs, and the PD yesterday told me that if I want to join their program I "certainly have a position."

For Radiology, I only applied to the 2 programs in my city as I am not willing to move my family. Too many extended family commitments.

Maybe I was just lucky. One program had 278 applicants and will be interviewing 33. The other had 318 applicants and will be interviewing 59.

Sounds good Pilot. I think your situation is the great exception however. Unless one has some truly awsome connections, the DO applicant to allopathic rads should most definitiely take the USMLE. Even my anesthesia interviewers told me that I am at a great advantage over the DO's which haven't taken the USMLE. Rads is quite a bit tougher to get into than gas. That being said, the decision to take the USMLE also depends on how competitive the individual programs one applies to. I'd take it anyways.

There ya go
