For those who have done it, what were your experiences? Did you have time to do OMM on any of your patients? What else can you say about it? I'm doing it in mid Feb.

There are a few patients that are so obviously OMM patients, they will specifically ask for it. Realize no one besides the patient will be grading you on your OMM, so you can do whatever treatment modality (besides HVLA) you choose). The timing crunch is actually in writing the note (14 minutes withpatient, 9 for note), so I usually left the room with time to spare to get more time with the note.

Look at the list of acceptable abbreviations ahead of time, though, You will be surprised how limited it is. (It's on the NBOME website).

It was easier than my school's SPE's. That's for dang sure.

Not true. There are video cameras in every room. These are used to help grade the OMM part.

I have to agree with the time crunch comes with writing the SOAP note. Even after writing hundreds of notes in rotations, you still feel pressed for time writing them.

Ok, I misspoke. You're right. BUT... It's not like an OMM practical at school, where you have a professor checking your diagnosis and treatment to see if what you did was correct. So I assume that as long as your treatment and your diagnosis on your SOAP note jive, I'm sure it's not a big deal what kind of OMM you do.

I second that question...I'm also taking it in mid February and was planning on figuring out hotel info soon...so this is a GREAT question!!!

I booked today and will not be taking it until May--obviously we are one of the groups that do not have to pass it to graduate. my thoughts are to stay near the airport at a hotel that will shuttle for free and just take the rail train to Conshocken that morning from the airport. hotels are cheaper that way and i won't have to rent a car. anybody else have ideas as i try to save my last few nickels before residency!!!!

Our regional dean went out there a month ago to help grade, etc...
She said the train from the airport was cheap (7 bucks) - but the ride was an hour and a half. She said driving would take you around 45 minutes (even though it's only 20 miles) by the time you factor in parking....and if traffic is bad - it's a longer drive than the train. That's the info she got from the folks out there that she worked with. I'm not sure what the shuttle costs - but just be sure to check the train schedule the morning of the exam in order to get there on time (if you stay at a hotel by the airport). She said it runs like clockwork once they get started.

Perhaps some PCOMers could give us some info??

I take the blasted PE on Feb 26th...you can priceline a room at the Springhill Suites Philidelphia Plymouth Meeting for 38 bucks...this was the only hotel we could find and the lowest price via priceline. I am flying into allentown renting a car (also pricelined for $12/day)and driving the 30-40 minutes to Coshohockalugi..That way i have my own transportation to and from. The motelis fairly close too, couple miles.

I pricelined a room at Courtyard by Marriot for around $50--it is a few miles away in Plymouth Meeting, but is a three-star and looks nicer than the $109/night hotel the NBOME suggested.

i live in philly right now (post-bacc at drexel) and here's my little bit of advice...hopefully it'll help you guys a bit.

there are hotels around the airport but i think your problem with taking the train is that the train to and from the airport (R1) is not the same as the one to Conshohoken (R6). i think you'd have to take the R1 to the the 30th street station and switch to the R6. i may be mistaken but i'm pretty sure this is your only option to get to Conshohoken. also, there are a few hotels in center city philly which is close to suburban station (next stop after 30th st station). you can then take the R6 directly from suburban station to Conshohoken. suburban station is located between 15th-17th sts. and JFK Blvd. most hotels around me are within 5-10 min walk to suburban station. also, the train ride from suburban station to Conshohoken is only about 30 min tops.

hope this helps....

I took it in Dec. Some advice, stay in Conshoken! My classmate stayed in Philly and almost missed the exam b/c there was a huge accident on the freeway. It took him 2 1/2 hours to go 20 miles. I also stayed in Philly and with no traffic, I clocked it at 25 min. It's just easier to stay across the street.

Just some advice. 😀

Hey --

Has anyone who's taken COMLEX PE gotten their grade yet? I don't sit for mine until 3/16, but a friend of mine took it in one of the first groups and still hasn't heard anything........

BTW --- there has been a rumor that by taking the COMLEX PE we would not have to take any additional individual State OMT exam. I brought this subject up with a AOA and State head-honcho-type this week and he doubts very highly that this is going to be the case. The requirement to take a State's OMT exam is built into the State's Physician Practice Act and, therefore, a law/addendum would have to be passed for something like this to be waived. As it is now, many of the State's are attaching addendums to their Practice Acts to include Step 2 CS (for MD and DO's) as a requirement for State license. Bottom line: Keep up with your State Physician Practice Acts.... 🙄

{sigh} Just another reason for the Class of 2005 to lube up before bending over to grab our ankles..... 😡 +pissed+

For those that have taken the exam, did you study for it? I am scheduled to take it soon and have no intention on studying. I just figured I could walk in off the street, hand them my grand, and pass without a problem. I've heard that it isnt all that difficult. Thanks!

Hey NurseyK,

I've never heard of this state OMT exam you are talking about. Is this just a few states? Anyone else who knows about it is welcome to chime in.

Off the top of my head, I don't know how many states have this exam (go to state medical board websites). I know Pennsylvania has it and NY does not. So after I get my license in NY, I can't just get reciprocity in Pennsylvania. I have to take State OMT test, (and of course make sure I have the damn Osteo Intern year done) --- THEN I can get PA State license.

Just one more hoop to jump through.....+pissed+
