what is this exam for, and why is not required to graduate? Is it required before we start or get accepted to any DO residency program?

Comlex I, II, & III are required in order to get licensed to practice medicine. You take Step III after the intern year of residency. It is required in order to graduate from residency and you need to pass it in order to be able to sit for the residency board exams. When you pass the board exam then you are board certfied.

Timeline:

Med School: Yr 1, Yr 2, Comlex I, Yr 3, Comlex IICE/PE (2 parts) during 4th yr

Residency: Yr 1, Comlex III Yr 2-6 (depending on specialty) When you pass then you can apply for a license to practice and can moonlight during residency. Need to pass in order to graduate from residency.

Take Board Exam, Graduate Residency

It's what you take during your intern year. It's what finally gets you a medical license and a year of post-graduate medical education is required to sit for it.

You take it the same timeframe AMGs take the usmle. Intern year. You only need step 2 usmle to graduate allo school and only need comlex 2 to graduate osteo school.

Relax. You're pre-med. you have time to figure all this out. There is even talk about merging step 1 and 2 into one large exam after 3 year. So far that's only talk. Point is, things change and you'll figure out what the steps are along the way. Relax and work on actually getting into med school first before you start worrying about when to take board exams.
