So, we can do the red reflex, swingling flash light, opthalmic exam, correct? We should not do the "corneal light reflex" or scrape with a q-tip. This is how I understand it.
 
But wait, we are also graded on "data gathering, physical exam" skills. So, if the patient presents with hypertension, I would assume we have to look at the eyes for papilledema, av nicking etc. Shining light into one's eyes is uncomfortable, but we still do it, don't we?

Don't do anything that might be uncomfortable to the patient. Remember, a huge part of this exam is your interaction with the patient.
