Hi there,

For those of you out there who have already taken COMLEX Step 1, I was wondering how you prepared for both the biochem and anatomy questions. It just seems that there is so much to review from these courses and I was wondering if you could share any strategies or text lists that you found helpful. Even if you can remember the types of things to focus on, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again!

🙂

Biochem....clinical applications and First aid....dont worry too much about it.
Anatomy....combine your anatomy studying with your OMM.

Agree with above post. However you better take the USLME too. Do a search for reasons why.

First Aid biochem is excellent. If you have trouble understanding a concept BRIEFLY consult your Lipponcotts Biochem.

I used HIGH YEILD GROSS ANATOMY. This little book is great. Its perfect bathroom reading (only time I consulted it). Know your stroke syndromes, head trauma, and occular neuropathies. Should take about 30 min to learn all that. Seriously. Know the CLINICAL SCENERIOS.

not a necessity to take the USMLE....remember if you do, you HAVE to do well on both, otherwise it hurts you.

We are in the process of taking the NBOME shelf exam. We saw very few clinical scenarios today. I was wondering if anyone who has taken the COMLEX also took the shelf exam. If so, how do they differ?

All of the places I have interviewed at have told me personally that taking the USMLE was one of the best decisions I could have made. Although there are lots of selection factors which go into landing interviews, the USMLE is the first thing used to weed people out, not the COMLEX.

Lets just say the programs were deciding only which DO's to interview. Do you think they would prefer the applicant who only took the the COMLEX and scored well or took the USMLE + COMLEX and scored well? They need something to compare them EQUALLY to the overwhelming majority of applicants, whom just happen to be allopaths. This illustrates why the USMLE should be a requisite.
