Hello all,

I wondered if anyone can comment on whether it's ok to be applying with all my pre-meds done except orgo 2 and orgo labs. I called all the schools I'm applying to, and none of them said that I had to EVER take any of the pre-med requirements, they said it was for my own personal benefit.

Thus, if I never take orgo 2 or the labs, is this ok? I will be submitting my app next week. I take the August MCAT, and I am aware that this may put me at a disavdantage but I HATE ORGO! Anyone else apply with one pre-req short and decide never to take that before matriculating?

Please comment.

Thanks,

T

My understanding is that you do have to take the prereqs, but if you've got Adcoms telling you different, more power to you. I'd get it in writing if I were you.

I was told that I do have to get my prereqs done before I matriculate, not before I apply.

As a last thought, you would be hard to compare to others come admissions time if you have a full concentration in rocks for jocks and someone else has A's in Orgo and Chem.

The prereq requirements for schools are different, so if all of the schools you apply to are okay with it (and I agree that you might want to get it in writing), it should be okay. But you should probably be prepared to explain why you didn't take orgo 2 or orgo lab during your interview, since most med school applicants do take those courses.

I actually applied last year without the last quarter of o chem also. Luckily, I was able to learn enough of it on my own to do decently on the MCAT. For most schools, they just require you to finish the pre-reqs by the time of matriculation, which I did finish this past spring semester, taking o chem as I was going through the application process. Needless to say, it wasn't included in my AMCAS nor were schools notified of my grade until about 2 weeks ago.

For the most part, it didn't hinder me much, I think. UCSD was the only school that wrote me an email asking about it before they sent me a secondary. At all the other schools, the question didn't even come up. So don't worry about it for now. It won't stop schools from accepting you. But you might still wanna take it before med school: it is a pre-req for a reason. Best of luck!
