Hi everyone! So the title is pretty much it, but heres some more background info,

So I'm a sophomore in his 3rd semester of undergrad. Over the course of the summer I volunteered at an ortho surgery and sports medicine practice which was a gold mine of experience ( shadowing, watching surgeries, taking patient histories, tons of patient contact, etc...). Because I had such a great experience over the summer, I plan to volunteer at the same practice for the remainder of my summers before going to med school (assuming I get in). Do med schools care if I only work within this specialty of medicine or do I need to work in a variety of medical specialties?

Side question that I hate to ask: Last summer is the only clincal volunteering expeirience I have, and I will be doing commuinty service (working with underprivelaged kids) throughout the year, am I "on track" in regards to my ECs?

Thanks in advance!

The only thing you "need" that directly relates to medicine is to be around patients for a little while and shadow some sort of physician. Beyond that just do what you enjoy.

All you need to do (clinically wise) is to have shadowing experience and some clinical contact experience. If you want to show some more diversity just shadow some other specialties and PCPs, you don't need more than a few hours with any of them and you don't need to be volunteering with them/in those specialties.

I think as long as you're doing something such as research, volunteer, or working, you should be fine. If you find yourself with some free time on weekends, try joining something else in which you want to be involved.

Also, I have zero authority in this but maybe it would be good to have a few hours in different specialties (ask the doctors at your current place for recommendations!) so you can have a broader sense of what medicine entails. Not necessarily for the application process, but for your own personal benefit.
