For my committee letter, I only have 1 science LOR from a professor who has taught me. I have a LOR from a professor whose class I was a TA for but she did not teach me in a classroom setting. I also have a LOR from my PI in which I was given a grade for research credits. But from what I have read, these will not count as a science LOR.

From my knowledge, many schools require either a committee letter or individual LORs (usually 2 science and 1 non-science). My question is that if I submit a committee letter with only 1 science LOR, would the committee letter override the individual LORs requirement of 2 non-science LOR that many schools have?

Thanks in advance.

You should check with each school you are interested in, as it can vary. However, I know with many schools a committee letter automatically meets LOR requirements.

As above, a committee letter does not need to meet requirements outlined for individual letters.
It is entirely sufficient and almost always preferred (except in Utah...).

HI everyone! @gyngyn @gonnif

I just wanted to check on this as well.
2 questions

1) For my school, they did not need 2 science LOR for committee letter but a lot of schools require 2 science LORs. So to confirm, is the committee letter enough to override that science LOR requirement?

2) For schools that require 2 science faculty specifically (in addition) to the Committee letter, would a letter from a science professor and a PI (who is tenured faculty at a different institution that I had for a summer internship) potentially be okay? Unless the prompt asks specifically for a science class "in which I got a grade," does the PI letter satisfy as a "science LOR?"

Thanks all :')
