Common General Surgery Procedures

Does anyone know where I could find a list of procedures that a fully trained general surgeon (no fellowship) practicing in a mid sized city would perform on a fairly consistent basis?

I'm curious as to what type of surgeon typically does lung, liver, pancreatic cancer surgeries, as well as gastric bypass, nissens, thyroid/parathyroids etc etc and can't seem to locate useful info through the search function.

just from what i've seen at a large community hospital in a decent size city, most of the general surgeons w/o any fellowship training did cases such as:

l/s chole, l/s appy, breast/sln bx, pilonidal cyst removal, sebaceous cyst removal, hernia repairs (tons), etc.

lung operations --> thoracic surgeons
liver/pancreas --> hepatobiliary/pancreas surgeons
gastric bypass --> bariatric surgeons, or general surgeons w/ MIS training
nissens --> general surgeons w/ MIS training
thyroid/parathyroid --> general surgery or surgical oncology

most of these are done w/ fellowship training

this is just what i have seen at the hospitals I've been at; it varies by hospital, even within the same city.
you also may want to take a look at the OR schedule at your school and see who does what at your institution.

add colectomy, trauma, ex lap, lysis of adhesions, small bowel resections, thyroids. Bariatric surgery-open & laparoscopic. Althought not "common," I would add Whipple's procedure, splenectomy, adrenal cases.

FNAs, biopsies, etc.

Some general surgeons do quite a bit of colonoscopy. Some general surgeons do carotids, although in my hospital this is done by vascular.



I'm sure I forgot a lot, and I'm sure somebody will add what I forgot.

General surgeons also do some bread and butter wound management/debridement, chronic venous stasis ulcer care, deep lipoma removal, some also put in porta-cath for chemotherapy, etc.
