Community Based Programs Vs. University Based Progrmam

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
community cases: lotsa bread n butter
academic cases: zebras

community workload: typically heavy
academic: Not as bad, but more intense

community responsibility: If procedure-orientd: d1 you do the procedures w/help
academic responsibility: ditto: d1 you get to do the consult while the seniors walk away with the patient after they've farted on you.

community personality: "cool man"
academic: "I'll gouge your'e eyes out and skull-**ck you."

just some observations

I don't know about the Skull F{}<king but....

Agree with more bread n butter at community programs. Academic programs often are tertiary referal centers -- where people go after community hospitals. As a medical student I also noticed a broader range in capabilities of residents at community based programs than at academic programs.

Probably the biggest difference is ease of acceptance to fellowship positions after residency. Also many academic programs are not as accepting of FMG/IMG applicants.

Can someone provide concrete explanations as to their differences!!!
No. You're asking for concrete generalizations and there aren't any. In general academic centers see some more unusual cases and focus on research and creating academic physicians. Community centers see less unusual stuff and focus on creating clinical physicians. There are so many exceptions to these statements though that they are almost worthless.
