I used the search and saw a number of threads, but none exactly fit my situation. I already have a bachelors from a regular 4 year school. I want to take chem 1 and 2 and labs over the summer. I am working during the day and no school in nj, or nyc offers it at night during the summer. My county college does. How much would it hurt my chances if I took only this course at community college and the rest at a regular 4 yr school?

and in general any opinions about community college and getting into dental school? Thanks.

I took a couple of classes at a Community College and I got into a bunch of schools, so it's not as if spending a little time at a community college makes you a bad candidate. That being said, I don't think it's a good idea to start taking a lot of the prerequisite classes at a community college, but one or two doesn't hurt.

thanks. that is kind of what I figured. I would only be taking the gen chem and labs the rest of the pre reqs would be at a 4yr.

i took all my pre-requiste classes at a CC after my BS degree.. i got a few acceptance.. i don't think a few classes will matter much.

Be careful though, I know Tufts doesn't accept any community college courses... they will make you retake the course. So you might want to check with the schools you are interested in.

yeah, I have heard about tufts. They seem to be one of the few who actually WONT allow it. From what I have read and heard it seems like most will allow one or two, though they might recommend taking 4 yr courses, or you might have to balance it with a really high dat etc.

many people take classes at community college and then transfer. Most schools don't care if some classes are from CC, as long as you have the stats to back it up.

It will only hurt your chances if you get A's at the CC and then a bunch of C's at the 4 yr. If you already have a degree and your GPA is good, and you do well on the DAT (19 and up), you could get away with taking most of your prereqs at a CC. It would be a good idea though to do a couple science classes at the 4 yr to show you're up to snuff.

You should verify the coursework requirements of each school you plan to apply to (easily done by going to the school's website)

For example: The DDS program at UIC requires all coursework to have been done an accredited US college or university.

Check with the schools you're planning on applying to.
My buddy was accepted this cycle then realized he was missing additional prereqs he will graduate in April and then take the additional prereq at CC before he starts D-School.
