Is this for dental school? An issue that could arise (you would have to ask columbia and/or any other school you are interested in to know for for certain) is that many d schools do not accept pre req's from a community college. However i know people who have gotten into d school and have had some courses at cc, but they had the majority of their credits and all of their pre reqs from a 4 year university. Good luck

Wow! You sure are thinking ahead. Already planning for D-school before you get into college. First off, make sure you use college to explore different subjects and careers before you decide on Dentistry. As far as the CC goes -- I'm assuming you'll be transferring to a 4 year University to complete your degree. Some schools like Tufts won't even look at you if you went to a CC for anything, but a lot of them will. If you go the way of a CC I wouldn't plan on take all your Dental pre-reqs there. I would take a few of them at the CC and then take the rest at the university you transfer to - that way you can prove that you can earn the same scores in science classes as any school.

Definitely check with Columbia directly about how they feel about community colleges, they will probably say they look more favorably on a 4-year University (that's what most of them told me). But, if you end up with a high GPA and do well on the DATs - a handful of community college classes won't stop you from getting into Dental school somewhere. Good luck!

Do not take prerequisites in CC.

I took all of my pre-reqs at community college (year of bio, gchem, ochem, physics) and I was accepted at Columbia last year, so it's not like community college is really going to bog you down at most schools. The schools really care much more about how you did in your upper division classes once you transfer (as in, keeping up similar grades) and doing well on the DAT. Don't let anyone tell you going to community college is a bad idea. Unless you want to go to Temple or Tufts though... they really don't like CC, haha.

Do not take prerequisites in CC.

huh? Is this advice based on opinion, or fact?

IMO, take your prereqs at your CC while they are cheap. Take some upper-level courses when you xfer to a four year.

Half my prereqs were completed at a four year a while back. I have taken OChem, Bio and MicroBio at my local CC and BioChem online.

Sure, some schools look down their noses at Community College coursework, but the MAJORITY of schools accept them. Each school has a website and usually it is clear whether they accept CC classes or not. I was interested in 17 schools, and each of them accepted CC prereqs.

Best of luck!
