Hello,
My base hospital for 3rd year is a 1/2 hour away from my parents house and I was wondering if it would be better to live at home and save money or live away so I can be closer to the action. Any advice???

30 minutes isn't bad-- if you can stand living with your parents, and giving up an extra 20 minutes of sleep on some of the earlier rotations like ob and surg, then it's probabaly a great idea to live at home and save money

Well, the cheapest thing to do is live with parents and sleep in call rooms if you have to be in early. Personally, it would drive me crazy to do that for months on end. Giving up 20 min. sleep when you are sleeping 5 hr/night is a big sacrifice.

Even if you decide to live closer to the hospital, it's not like you'll be living AT the hospital. And you might save time if you have parents willing to do stuff for you like grocery shopping and laundry once in a while. If you can handle living with your parents, I say go for it.

(On a side note, I assume you're vegan given your username. As a vegetarian married to a vegan, I say this sincerely and not as someone criticizing veganism at all. You might find it extremely difficult to remain vegan once 3rd year begins. The one vegan I knew in medicine who had been vegan for several years stopped once he started 3rd year of medical school. Even if you're willing to bring lunch every day which you likely already do, it's very hard to bring several meals in a row when you're doing overnight call. Remaining vegetarian isn't hard at all--perhaps you could consider ovo-only or lacto-only vegetarianism? Just an idea)

I had a 30 min. drive last year and didn't mind it at all. I actually thought it was a good time to think about the day and what I would be doing and also to unwind at night before I got home. I'd stay at home and save yourself some money.

Thank you for all your responses😉 I've decided that I will live at home next year😉

Pillowhead: I am no longer vegan (lacto-ovo for 2 years) I just havent stopped using the vegangirl name😳 😳 😳
