Hi guys,

I was wondering if there are any Western U students who commute from the Garden Grove/Anaheim area? What is the traffic like? Is it a bad idea for me to commute? BTW, can you guys tell me what is your typical day like in term of studying and free time?

Thanks, I know that was a lot of questions but I don't know any students who go to Western.

I'm from Santa Ana and I'm thinking of commuting too. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing from them after the interview last week. This wait is killing me day after day....

Well I go to Cal Poly Pomona which is near Western. Coming from Anaheim in the morning is not bad at all. You take the 57N and there is barely any traffic. Going home should be no problem either.

it's been a few years but the 57 used to be pretty congested around the 60 and the 91. the drive from the block to diamond bar could take up to an hour if i recall correctly.

isn't housing a lot cheaper near western?

Going from Anaheim to Pomona should take you against traffic during rush hour. If you already live in Anaheim, commuting should be fine. With good traffic, I'd say it's about a 40 minute drive at reasonable speeds. If you're still looking for a place to live, however, I would suggest looking for somewhere a little closer.

The reason I asked was because I had commuted to UCI all 4 years and it was fine. I just wanted to make sure that going to Pomona would take around the same time.

Thanks everyone for their input 😀

You should test drive sometimes once during the typical weekdays and see. 🙂

If you choose NOT to commute, DON'T live in the area around school either. Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, or Claremont are all nearby cities that have nicer communities. Btw..I have a friend who commutes to Western for Pharm school from Anaheim. She's a 2nd year and finds the commute not so bad.

One student told me that he lived close to the campus and the train honking is really annoyance. Are there any other reasons??

Well, Pomona is not a nice place to live. It is like downtown Santa Ana..it is ghetto and not safe. I live there right now because I'm attending WesternU for a different program. I live close enough to walk, but I don't because Pomona is a bad area...especially downtown Pomona where the school is. You see "suspicious" people walking around at night and it makes you want to stay indoors. It is by no means a student-centered living community like the communities surrounding UC's or Cal states.

How about "Upland"? Is it too quite and boring? Is there any place that is safe, close to fun & close to campus??

I'm not exactly sure how far Upland is or what's around there. However, finding stuff to do in Pomona involves driving down to the Chino Hills/Chino area. That's another reason why I recommend Chino Hills. You're gonna be in school for 4 years..might as well enjoy it and not have to worry about where you live. Also, it is close to the 60 and 71 freeway, so it is convenient.

For those of you who are thinking of the Plaza apartments..I've only heard bad stuff about it. They are really cheap..you go and wonder why. They also have flexible lease terms..if you're gonna try it out, get the shortest lease available. 😀

anyone planning to commute to Western? PM if u r looking for someone to carpool 🙂

Upland is a nice area but going to Western, it's better to Live in Diamond bar, Walnut or Chino Hills because if you live in Upland, you are going with the traffic both commuting to and from school. It could take you a looooooong time to get there. If you live in the other three cities listed, you go against traffic.

Not to mention..if you live in those 3 cities, you can avoid the freeway completely! 🙂
