Yea what's up with that. I was thinking maybe it was the 26 that did an AOA traditional intership but I'm not sure. Tkim could you clarify that?

Well, if you add up all the different numbers...you will get 168. I believe their class size is 170, so it would seem that there were 26 that did the AOA traditional first year AND 26 did not match anywhere.

27% of the class did not match or choose to do an AOA traditional first year.

That was sent to our class (2005) in an email. 26 did a traditional AOA year. 26 different students did NOT match "either internship or residency". There was no further specificition as how many of those 26 didn't match just for internship, just for residency, or for both, since you can match for one with or without the other.

So 26 people really didn't match? Is there any reason for that? Were they just dumb or what.

Can someone explain what a traditional AOA consists of....Thanks!

From the AOA site. http://do-online.osteotech.org/index.cfm?PageID=sir_postdoc

An internship is an educational program requiring extensive participation in patient care. It serves as the link between predoctoral and postdoctoral clinical training and provides a year of maturation and transition from application of predoctoral knowledge to clinical decision-making skills. The internship exposes graduates to core disciplines including internal medicine, family practice, general surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics and emergency medicine.

Internships are offered in the following formats:

Traditional rotating internship: provides a broad-based, rotating curriculum covering each core discipline.

Special emphasis internship: provides a broad-based curriculum covering each core discipline with an emphasis in a particular specialty area but does not grant residency credit but fulfills only internship requirements

Specialty track internship: provides the majority of rotations in a specific specialty but also provide exposure to the core disciplines. This program grants joint credit for the internship and first year of residency training.
AOA-approved internship placements are awarded through the Match Program to senior osteopathic medical students.

Just so everyone doesnt freak out about the match list....

It is my understanding that the list is incomplete, and that the person who sent the email to Tkim and the rest of the DO 2007 class at western stated that the list did not include everyone. Also, 26 people didnt match out of a class of 170, yet all of them scrambled into a program. This match year was extraordinary in that many schools had problems. UC Irvine this year had the worst match year in history when 14 of their 92 students did not match and had to scramble. 😳 I know they were very embarrassed.

I took a look at that list and one possible reason that it is incomplete is that people in our class accepted positions outside the match, both osteopathic and allopathic programs. I say this because I know at least 2-3 people who took positions outside the match and they are not listed.

Oh, one more thing...our class size is 180 people.
