Yes, I heard from a first-year that the neighborhood is kind of ghetto- but the school itself is very nice-particularly the first year lecture hall.

Heard the next day...

As for the area, it isn't a nice neighborhood (students tend to live outside of Pomona), but I visited last summer and would feel comfortable enough going to school there. The buildings are a converted outdoor mall, so the insides are all fairly new renovations. It's got that typical So. Cal. stucco feel to it.

I think about 2 weeks after my app was complete.

Hey what's up. I'm a first year at COMP (currently in biochemistry class....). Although I've only been in school for maybe two months now, my impression of the area around the school is that, yes, although it is a bit lower class, right around the school isn't exactly dangerous or anything. Most people do tend to live outside of Pomona, but there are several students who live within walking distance of the school, and it works out for them very well (especially since rent is a lot lower in Pomona then in the surrounding areas).

Good luck with everyone's interviews.

Hey guys, when you submitted your letters of rec, did you have to fill in that evaluation form? Can't you just send your letters of rec from your undergrad school's letter of rec services?
Also, did anyone send in a letter of rec from an MD instead of a DO? How do you guys get a letter from a physician? Do you ask them to send the letter to all the schools you are applying to? I can't imagine asking the physician to send in a letter everytime you get a secondary.

A little advice, I waited till I had 3 or 4 secondaries and then approached the D.O. with typed and stamped envelopes to those schools. I also attached a sheet suggesting what kinds of things the schools were interested in. Either way, the key is to to make the D.O. do the least work as possible that way when your other sec's come in she/he won't hesitate to send them again. Hope it helps...

This is a good way to find a DO to shadow. The DO I found wrote me a really good letter of rec after I shadowed her. Good luck

It should take about 2 weeks. COMP is really good about letting you know as soon as possible. Expect to wait 1-2 months at other schools.

I interviewed on 9/14 and my acceptance letter was dated on 9/20. I suppose 6 day turnaround time isn't bad at all. Then again, I was in the first interview group. I don't know if you've already interviewed but they tell you that the adcom meets every Wednesday to go over interviewees.

😕 Not at any of the schools I've interviewed at-DMUCOM, KCOM, MSUCOM

What schools are you talking about? VCOM responding in less than a week, DMU in 2 weeks, COMP said two weeks, Touro said two weeks as well. The norm seems to be 2 weeks and that is via snail.

i just interviewed at comp. what is everyone else's thoughts about COMP? and MS-I or MS-II out there at COMP that can reply?

does anyone know about the attrition (dropout/kickout rate) rate? since i heard that they grade on basically a striaght scale where 70% is the lowest with a passing (no curve)...im scared of the grading. any comparisions to AZCOM (what is their grading scale?) thanks all.

uclabruin2003,

i'm a MS1 at COMP. we started off this year with 209 students, but now we're down to 204. people left for various reasons...

70% is passing, but the profs are flexible in some classes (esp. anatomy). last year, they raised everyone's grade in anatomy 6-7%, so 63% was actually passing...i presume they will do the same for us this year.

comp's first semester is pretty intense. we have exams every monday from now until mid-dec. i think comp is a good school and the administration has told us that california residency programs look very favorably upon COMP grads.

good luck.

Do you know what these 'various reasons' are? Is is because they did'nt pass? Just curious.

i know one got into med school elsewhere and some others left before the first round of exams. decided they didn't want to do it i guess...

i'm an MS-1 at COMP and i can tell you that i am more glad i came here every day. all those rumors floating around? mostly hysterics created by people who are dissatisfied with life in general and want everyone to be as miserable as they are. however, there are some things i've heard that have a little truth to them. those fail to take situational variables into consideration- thus a little issue becomes a big "COMP sucks" whine. ultimately, it's a great place to be.

we have had people leave, but like quaker said, mostly for non-academic reasons. i do expect that we will lose some people after this semester and after this year, because that's what usually happens. some people for whatever reason just cannot handle the pressure. the good thing is that starting with our class the administration was much more selective in who they accepted than they had been in past years.

as for grading, we don't have a curve as much as we just have straight grade inflation. let's call it what it really is. this is the theory i've heard: they look to see how many people are going to fail with no points added on, then they add as many points as it takes for all of those people except for the bottom 5 or so to pass. if the term "grade inflation" scares you, just note that it's not too different from the practices of a lot of other universities, even some really big prestigious ones. even though people may bi#ch about the practice, when grades come out most people are stoked they got a better grade than they really earned.

in some ways it would be better to go to a pass/fail system, but that's up to the administration.

as for comparisons to AZCOM, i heard it's really hot there. and aren't people all gun-toting in arizona? crazy cowboys- i'll stick with smog, thanks.
