...Would you guys mind posting your stats (or stat ranges) or those of people you know of who got in or interviewed?

Not everyone posts here either 😉 You are likely to get a better answer from MDapplicants or USNEWS than from people here.

i guess so...but, i would also imagine that for those people who are regulary active on SDN who have time to read my post or to suggest going to mdapplicants...it wouldn't hurt to take a few seconds to post stats if you are willing to do so... i don't like mdapplicants user interface.

If I may...About how many hours worth of volunteering and shadowing did you guys accumulate? Is it just me or do the two kind of overlap? I found that to be the case for me, like I was shadowing and volunteering at the same time...That's what got me on the COMP secondary...<sigh>

You guys have shiney numbers 🙂 Congrats on your interviews/acceptances!
I have a 6 ps, 9 v, 8 bs...3.5 overall...2.93 sci and 3.1 post-bac GPA...I'm really hoping they will focus on my post-bac gpa rather than my overall sci gpa since i was not a sci major (i did poorly in the few sci classes i took as an undergrad)...
i have around 700 hours of volunteering/shadowing, 2.5 years of research with a publication, have been a teacher for four years...and REALLY want to go to COMP!!!!! but i may need to take the mcat again (no more sci classes for now, i just don't think i can boost up my sci gpa that much, although i could try to make the overall sci hit a 3.0...maybe? don't know if it's worth it)...i just mailed in my secondary yesterday...the only reason i applied late is because i was an ignorant fool who knew nothing about DO schools until a month ago.......

MCAT: 25
GPA Overall: 3.4
BCPM: 3.8

Accepted, applied very early, interviewed in August!

Wow, Clement, your EC's are impressive. I can guarantee you that the research you have done (it must have been extensive and thorough considering that you published), your teaching background, and exhaustive shadowing make you a fully qualified candidate. I definitely would consider your credentials to supplement the numerical stats (gpa, mcat), and adcom's at osteo schools seem to favor those more strongly than pure numerics.

The one most definitive trend you'll find is that for individuals with sub 29-30 and sub 3.5-3.6 gpa's is that they applied early in the process to avoid the increasing competition that comes with rolling admissions.

Good luck!

Thanks Bananafish! Congrats to you!
About how many shadowing/volunteering hours did you guys have? I tried to ask my COMP admissions counselor what they look for and she kept answering "you would find that out during your interview..." first off, i was like MY interview? oh yea? (but that can't be- because she literally entered my secondary's arrival in the system as we were speaking on the phone)...i think she meant in general...and no, she's not gloria (i love that woman!)

You should check out the COMP Class of 2010 thread too.

Here is my TOP TEN as to why COMP appealed to me:

1) It is a very established school, as it’s older than quite a few schools.

2) Numerous rotation sites all over California (north, south, central).

3) Heavy emphasis on medical service to underserved communities (WesternU Medical Center in downtown Pomona, PCHAT, many students volunteer abroad)

4) NEW curriculum! I appreciate it’s organ-based approach and block schedule. My student host for the interview night told me how she would come home and she would struggle between deciding what to styudy between like 3-4 subjects! She was on the old curriculum. The new approach allows one to focus on main subjects at a time.

5) Location! I’ve never lived in Southern California before, and it seems so cool...a different and exciting experience! Nothing can beat the weather🙂

7) Diversity of student body and numerous involvement opportunities.

8) Placement in many cool residency spots in California.

9) I talked with quite a few graduates and current students at COMP, and they all seemed quite happy with their education there.

10) New on-campus housing.

Of course, I don't think downtown Pomona is the most ideal place, but I've realized, one can't get everything one wants!

A low science GPA and a correspondingly low MCAT raises lots of red flags for the ADCOMS. I'd retake the MCAT, since I kind of doubt that you'll see any action this year.

I had your exact science GPA, with a 3.4 cumulative, and my first MCAT was 24T, and I applied a lot earlier than you did and got no love from anyone(granted, I did NOT apply to COMP, but I can imagine the outcome). I retook the next year and got a 30P and it was my saving grace. No revenge for a low science GPA like a good MCAT. Good luck to you, and I hope for your sake that you don't have to retake.

👍

COMP'S location cannot be beat. Great weather, and tons of opportunities in Cali. I'm really excited! Pomona isn't the best, but in my opinion it's paradise compared to southside Richmond, VA and many other east coast holes.

I don't know what's happening at other DO schools but here are some reasons to go to COMP:

1)COMP just completed a univeristy research center and will build more and has added research oreinted professors to its faculty from places like Stanford and Princeton.

2)Will start construction of a new large DO building in 2007.

3)highest GPA/MCAT average of all DO schools, if that says anything about the quality of your future classmates and how COMP is perceived by hospitals/organizations that care about numbers on paper.

4)Will add and run 15 new residency programs in cooperation with a well-respected health care system within next 2 years, well by the time class 2010 graduates. Dean said he plans to start up those programs with COMP students since it will be all run by COMP faculty/administration and they will know us better personally. Students asked "which 15 specialties?" Dean said "if you can list 15, it'll probably be in there." Residency programs also mean more spots for clinical rotations in 3rd & 4th year that will be exclusively COMP.

5)There is an active ongoing process to turn downtown Pomona into a hip university vilage/work-live typ of deal.

6)And of course the number one reason is: 60+ degree sunny days in Dec - Feb. With med school being so stressful, you have no idea how the sun could keep you motivated and sane and we take it for granted here.

Wow you pretty much covered it all 🙂 I would also add one more thing... the awesome new Dean who really seems to care about the students and has big goals for COMP.
