I need to choose between OHSU and NYU.

I am out-of state for OHSU so OHSU only saves me $100,000 for living expenses.

Could you guys compare the two for their patient pool, specialization opportunities, and in general?

Go to OHSU. they have a new building and life will be less hectic than NYC. Portland>>>NYC.
OHSU has a lot of research going on so it might be good for specialization. Patient pool should be pretty decent as ppl can get to OHSU by taking the sky tram very easily.
OHSU is cheaper by more than 50k, so you should automatically pick OHSU just based off of that.

are there really decent patient pool? I heard the building moved down which makes public access easier I suppose. But I think there would be more people willing to come to nyucd just because the poverty level is higher?

portland>nyc? lol...seriously? but, to each his/her own.

but in all seriousness, choose OHSU. 100k is a lot of money, and you always should go with the cheaper route. you can't go wrong with either, but save yourself some $$.

I think you're the only person I've heard say "only saves me $100,000" ...............................
yeah well with that 100k, I get to live in NYC which I never get to in the future. Well at the poverty level though with monthly allowance of 3500.
Well 100k would be paying 1000 dollar more for monthly loan repayment i guess..
But, wouldn't NYU's name value (as in people know where you went to dental school) matter a bit? I know patients don't care that where you went to school, but some actually do. Or if I go abroad for anything, would NYU help? because noone really knows what OHSU is... if you are not in the field.

You're in control if you would ever want to live in NYC, you could always move there after you graduate if you love NYC so much. I guess it all depends on how much you wanna live in NYC and value 100k before interest. You're right, generally people do not care where you got your DDS/DMD from. Ask anyone if they can name where their dentist went to school...

And when you say go abroad, do you mean doing something like dentists without boarders or something? I don't really understand... But I'm gonna go with "no" anyways. No matter where you go, you can always make connections and network.

Yeah I do not want to live in New York but it would be cool if I ever do (sounds contradictory but you know what i mean its cool since I am young and I would not wanna suck up craziness of city like NYC when I am over 30). And it is really expensive to open a practice in NYC so most likely I would not live in NYC ever if I don't now haha...
well yeah you can say that to any school but you are saying that there is zero value coming from going to a school that most people know? I believe I already know an answer which is yes there is some value whether it is substantial or not but the measure of substantiality differs in various people and communities in the U.S. and abroad. I know the name somewhat matters among Indians Chineses Koreans or w/e community that is.

Since you are going to UOP out of all the school, price and time really matter to you I suppose.

Well, I am leaning toward OHSU since they are putting more focus on research with the new dean and the strong material science research which I am interested in.

There really isn't any value in school names. People genuinely don't care where you went to school so long as you're personable, skilled, and reasonable. It also seems sort of odd that you want to do something now that you will not enjoy in the future (live in NYC). You're making the right choice with OHSU.

I still don't understand your "going abroad" statement... What are you trying to do abroad? Practice? Volunteer? And with the first thing I put in bold, I have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm aware that UoP is on the expensive side, and we get out a year early. And I think we can all agree that price and time matter to all of us here on sdn, if not the entire human population haha

Just go to OHSU, always go to the cheapest option.

Seems like I am going to OHSU haha
Well going abroad as in maybe possibly becoming a faculty at an abroad institution after passing their board or whatever if I ever want to go abroad. In that case, people would know NYU more than OHSU
Anyway, short time and cheap money are not everything. How you spend money and time are everything. And do not assume that dental school experience would be same everywhere.

If you were trying to be faculty abroad, odds are they would know both schools.
