Does anyone know how difficult it is to obtain a fellowship in forensic psych?

I am leaning toward going to a smaller community program but am afraid that such a program will hurt me too much for obtaining a fellowship? Should I go to a university program with a strong reputation or is forensic psych easily obtainable through any decent program?

while the interest in applications for general adult psychiatry residencies is rising in the past few years, any psych fellowship is realistically attainable at this point.

with all the hype surrounding the need for child psychiatrists, even their fellowships do not completely fill each year. it is true that forensic psych has fewer programs, and as such, fewer spots, when compared to the other psych subspecialties. also, keep in mind that forensic psych is not for everyone. you can definitely get a forensic psych fellowship spot somewhere. whether it is at yale or alabama is another issue.

my advice would be to pick the residency program that best suites you, regardless of community vs. university affiliation, and the program's national reputation status. with a little interest , a good work ethic, and solid recommendation letters, you will be in good shape. good luck!

I agree with prominence...

Much will depend on if you have your sights set on a specific program for fellowship (ie. Case Western, Yale). Training within or having strong recs from those with connections would help. However, in general, you will likely encounter little difficulty finding a forensics fellowship.
