I'm an MS4 in the military who matched FP but have since have had a change of heart. I've done an EM rotation and love it. I also love GS. In the military, you may complete your internship, then do an operational tour that counts as your payback time, then choose to either complete a military residency, or a civilian one. Say, hypothetically, I completed my military FP internship, served my time doing an operational tour, then got out of the military, would I be able to start over and complete a civilian EM or GS residency without any roadblocks, assuming I matched into a civillian GS or EM program? I've heard something about pay issues if you've completed one internship then start a different one, but I'm very unclear on this. If anybody could shed some light on this, I'd much appreciate it.

In general, you won't run into may roadblocks on this. Many people do this. I usually look at the military leadership experience as a big plus. The question is whether you have full medicare funding, which is not at all clear. The military does not bill medicare for residents, but according to the AAMC brochure on DME/IME funding, the source of funding doesn't matter.

Regardless, many PD's will not care and will be happy to train you, given your service and experience, assuming you get good letters from your time in the military.

aProgDirector,

As an EM applicant, my experience is that military experience is looked upon quite favorably in the EM world. Also, TONS of people switch into EM after completing an intern year in another specialty (they discover how amazing EM is!) I think this could actually work to your advantage. Good luck!
