Hello fellow SDN members!
I am in a tough situation. I have a low cum GPA (less than 3.0
) but I have strong EC (3 research experiences, 1 academic enrichment program, shadowed ~150 hours, lots of volunteer and work experiences, etc). I will also be taking the DAT the first week of July.
My original plan was to apply this cycle for 2014 admissions but reading all these threads (including the under 3.0 GPA club), I probably shouldn't anymore because I would not be considered a competitive applicant at all and I think I would be wasting my $$$/time.
However, in order to bring up my GPA, I was planning to take on another year of recommended upper level bio classes through open university while finishing up a couple pre-requisites for dental school:
Fall 2013
Biochemistry
Cell Biology
Genetics
Psychology (at a cc)
Spring 2014
Evolutionary Biology
Molecular Biology
Cell & Molecular Immunology
Pharmacology (at a cc)
Does this seem like a valid plan to improve my GPA? I know a lot of people have recommended post-bacc programs and special masters (which I have been looking into) but what about a 2-year dental hygiene program at the local community college? How would adcoms look at that?
Or I was suggested by my older sister to sign up for dental assisting courses at the cc while finishing up last pre-requisites (biochemistry at a 4-year university & psychology at a cc) for this upcoming fall semester. I wouldn't be able to take the most of the upper div biology courses though because it would conflict with the dental assisting courses. I don't have any licenses/certificates so maybe the 1-year dental assisting program is getting my foot into the door with more dental experiences for the future.
Thanks for taking the time to read my long post. Any constructive and resourceful advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂
