Make sure to ask the school that you will be attending about requirements. Often schools will even require a specific computer to be bought thru them. Just check this out to make sure you don't end up buying two computers and that the one you do purchase will run the software your school might require (ex. at my school your laptop is your microscope for histo and path and has to run specific software with pretty steep requirements).

Whatever you get, be sure it's lightweight and reasonably durable! Seriously, you'll be carrying this thing all over the place. Now I won't lie, a 12" screen kinda stinks if your school does histology/pathology online, but my back thanks me every time I load my 5 lb laptop into my backpack.

Really though, you should ask the school you intend to attend what their requirements are. I, personally, have been endlessly happy with my 12" iBook G4, but everyone's preferences are different. It would be best for you to wait a few months, do some thinking and some research, and get what's best for you.

May I ask you few questions? What kind of bags do students bring to class? Do students carry around lots of books? Does any one bring newer cases with wheels or regular backpack is sufficient where laptop can also be stored? Would you asdvise getting one with wheels or would it be an overkill.

I carry a backpack that has a laptop compartment. It is usually entirely sufficient though occasionally I do end up with a textbook in my arm. I can usually only attack one subject a day so I carry the books for that subject, not multiple subjects which would just be unmanageable.

I just bought my computer about a year ago, so I think I'll be keeping it as long as I can. It's not one of those mini ones with the annoyingly compact keyboards, but it's light enough that I wouldn't mind carrying it around.

IBM thinkpad X60

I hear it is very versatile and reliable (well the X41 sure the X60 is too), and the writing tablet is the best of the best. I think my mom is getting me this for christmas/birthday/christmas/birthday, lol.

I've never seen anyone use one of the bags with wheels. I use a backpack with a laptop compartment. Most of my class uses a similar style of backpack, or they use a attache case to hold all of their things.

As far as carrying books, we typically carry texts that we'll need while at school. An example would be an atlas for anatomy. Otherwise, the notes and handouts are sufficient enough to replace most books.

Just make sure it can run Counterstrike.

 once i figured out how my school network worked.....my class attendance seemed to suddenly drop, hmmmmm.

for person asking about wheel backpack:

please don't do it, please, think of the children

I love my Dell latitude 820 with 15.4" screen and dual processor...that thing kicks ass. It may be a little too much there, but I'm pretty much using it as a desktop replacement and bought it straight up out of loan money, so whatever Ill spoil myself a bit. With the exception of anatomy now, all of my notes have been taken on my laptop and Ive used it for everything school related. I carry it in my backpack, because there's no way in hell im calling extra attention to myself carrying a big laptop bag around the medical campus here. It's not in the greatest part of town and I'd rather just look like im carrying boring books in there and not a $1700 computer.

Whatever you get, I would wait until next year before class starts. There will probably be back to school specials, and you'll also get the newest software. Vista will be out in January, and I think Leopard will be out for Macs as well, though I'm not sure when off the top of my head.

thanks for your guys advice, surely appreciate it!
