How are you guys planning on paying for new computers for medschools? Are there any special computer loans available?

your school should allow you to get extra financial aid for expenses like this. i am planning to undertake a loan from the school so that i can get a computer, since laptop is required at the school i am accepted to.

you can take a $3000 loan (above and beyond your tuition and living expenses) for a computer once during your 4 years. you can just purchase a computer, and show the documentation to the financial aid office and they will add that amount to the loan.

Wow, $3000! We had a limit of $1000. There is a big difference between what you can get with an extra 2g's.

If you aren't doing graphics work, doing hard core gaming, or programming, you dont need a 3k computer.

1.5k will get you a beautiful laptop. 1k will get you a decent one

And for $300, you can get one that works just fine. (see e-bay dell latitude)

Well, my problem is that I am going to attend a school that doesn't require their students to have computer so they can't increase the student budget for computer purchases. Any more suggestions about alternative loans?

I'm thinking that 1.5 is most likely closer to the standard loan offer at schools that require a computer. 3000 seems exceptionally generous. I'm trying to decide if I want to get a laptop or a PC. It seems like the obvious choice is a laptop, but I'm concerned that I'd lose it, drop it, or that it would get stolen.

$3000 is plenty for a PC. I can only imagine the computer I could build with that 😀. But I currently have 5 computers so I don't think I need another one.

Some places have the option of having accident coverage so if you break it it gets fixed for "free". And just never let the laptop out of your sight if you are worried about it getting stolen. Other than someone breaking into your car and stealing it, I don't see how people get their laptops stolen.

At my old job, we had atleast 6 stolen that I know of. The employees think "hey, I'm at work. It's in MY cube and plugged in" or "It's in MY lab". Next thing you know, someone walks off with it.
