I know some places require all students to have the same model computers - Any idea if there is a laptop requirement at: Buffalo, Mt Sinai, Cornell, Northwestern, NYU, Upstate, or Michigan?? Thanks.

If there is, they will no doubt tell you, or give you the computer when you show up.

Lots of schools have special deals for computers, but you have to wait until you start the program to get it, too. Often the cost of the computer is factored into your financial aid, if you get a computer early you won't get that aid money - and right now, financing a computer at less than 2% isn't a bad deal.

cornell has no computer requirement - if you want, they'll factor it into your fin/aid package, but only as an unsubsidized loan. since the med school has a fair amount of computers available in the library and labs, including wireless-equipped laptops, i guess they figured there wasn't any need for a formal requirement.

I recommend getting a powerbook laptop above all things. Unless the school requires that you bring a windows based PC for some application they want you to use (highly doubtful). I know that I'm going to bring three systems (just in case): workstation/server, laptop, and publishing desktop.

I don't know if I'm joking yet. 😉

Powerbooks are great (if you can afford them). However, just a decent computer or laptop will do. It's not like your going to need a top of the line gaming pc because there will be no time to play games. Ok there might be but not as much time.

Get an iBook instead. In med school, you'll have no need for a tiny bit more power, but will get a lot of use from the added battery life, sturdier case, and cheaper price.

Will I be fine with a desktop ? I don't feel like buying a laptop...

Sure why not? A lot of people get laptops thinking they'll take notes on them, etc etc. In my experience (not much) this is rarely the case. Personally, I think one of the best investments in college is a sub-$100 PDA.
