Is anyone else concerned about the new curriculum at NYCOM? I was recently accepted and I am a little worried about the way things seem to be organized at this school. Compared to other schools, they seem to be lacking in resources for students and not as on top of things. I would love to stay in NY, but this is the impression I have been given. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I completely off base?

Hi. I am wondering what concerns you about NYCOM, and the new curriculum? I just received my acceptance letter today (YAY, 1st one!!!) so i'm curious what you think problems are. Thanks and congrats on your acceptance.

Congrats as well! I was very excited to receive my acceptance, I just felt like mutual respect between the students and admin. seemed to be lacking. When I spoke with students, there was a lot of eye rolling and complaining about the curriculum and the admin. If there were major problems and they are addressing them, great! But I am not sure I want to be the first class to experience a major curriculum overhaul that may or not be an improvement. It seemed the students are much more independent than at other schools, I don't know that the small campus encourages spending extra time outside class there, and I know you will never catch me in that gym! I take seriously the comments of current students and apparently many are there because they want to be doctors, not specifically DO, and hate being forced to take OMM. They complain about it and only care about passing the tests, never planning to use it in their practices. Of course not everyone feels that way, but it made me really sad to hear it. Maybe others have had a better experience than I did, I felt like the school was somewhat unorganized and unprofessional when I was there...

I understand your thoughts on the matter...our first year guides on our interview day seemed lukewarm at best to certain aspects of the curriculum, but in general they were happy. I think a lot of your concerns stem from the fact that the class size at NYCOM is so large. With that many students, you're bound to find a wide variety of thoughts on the curriculum, OMM, the administration, etc. One of the questions I asked my interviewer was if he felt that the enormous class size in any way hindered his ability to teach the way he would like to. He said no, but conceded that there were times when it could be a handful. I think you're going to find a section of any DO class that has no interest in OMM, just as I think you'll find that whatever changes are made to the curriculum for next year will at the very least be an improvement upon what they have now. Who knows...when I was there it was a day when the second-years had three exams or something, so the place was a bit of a zoo...with so many students, I'm sure it gets hectic. Anyway, congrats on the acceptance! I'm sure you can find current students to talk to about your concerns...

Hi All,
I understand that many of you are concerned with NYCOM's everchanging curriculum, I assure you that it is a good thing in medical school. I am a first year at NYCOM right and am very appreciative of their everchanging curriculum. I am a older student that have worked in the medical field for quite a few years prior to attending medical school so have seen my friends come in and out of NYCOM for the past 6 years, things are getting better year by year because of these continuous changes. For example three years ago Anatomy was 3 blocks, the class was too rushed so they changed it to 5 blocks last year, they noticed that they were teaching things in too much details and the bodies didn't last too well in five blocks so they changed it to 4 this year, which so far seems like a perfect balance. Don't be afraid of a school that is constantly changing, it is better than going to a school that stands behind tradition rather than student input. I can only speak for myself, however, I am rather happy with the administration, there is a great deal of mutual respect on both parts. As an example, this years 1st year class was pressured to complete a enormous amount of work in three week period, and the administration felt the strife of the students and rescheduled and cancelled an entire day of class to accomodate a extra study day (although this does not sound like a lot of days, anything helps). For those who didn't get a good impression from the students I am guessing you interviewed around December 10th-23rd.. why? because we were all stressed... normal people turn frightening right before exams no matter which school you go to. We had exams coming up and taking final exams for 3 classes so some of us may not have given the best impression. Like I said before I have no regrets in NYCOM. Just think bigger class= more collegues, more networking and better curves 😀

Thank you for taking the time to reply, it really helps to hear from current students. I am glad that you feel positively enough about your school to be in the pre-do forum defending it! That says a lot! I have a hard decision to make in the next month and I appreciate your input. 🙂

Nice job Irish. I remember how my first letter felt too, enjoy, you did it! Your post said Rochester NY, me too, over at RIT primarily. I have reserved a seat at LECOM-erie, but i have an interview at NYCOM in Jan., so I am going to check it out anyways.

It's interesting to hear all this feedback about NYCOM, Does anyone have any idea what rent's run on or around NYCOM?

Rent around NYCOM is easy 1K a month for 1 bed-room apartment and 0.8K for a studio. Usually students end up renting a private house. In the immediate area around NYCOM, it is very expensive. Most people end up staying in Hicksville. It is slightly cheaper there.
