Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I was wondering if OT programs in California are fine with summer classes taken at community colleeges being applied to the prereqs for the programs.

I was also wondering if OT programs in California factor said summer courses into your cumulative GPA when he go over all of your paperwork.

Thanks!

Whether or not a college will accept a class from a community college depends entirely on the program. I believe most programs will accept it, but you have to check on their website. As for whether or not it will be factored into your GPA, I'm pretty sure that if it appears on your transcript, it will be counted toward your GPA, just like all of your other classes.

Every school has their own policies about what classes they accept and how they calculate GPAs. You should really contact the admissions dept of each program you are interested in applying and ask them directly, instead of relying on responses from strangers online. Plus, communicating with admissions counselors means they get to know you and your passion for OT and their program, which can't hurt when they receive an over-saturation of applicants, especially with OTCAS schools. Good luck!

I just recently got accepted into USC's OT program through early decision, and they accept any courses taken at a community college during any semester (summer, fall, winter, spring) as long as the college is accredited. For example, I took Anatomy during the summer at a community college and they accepted my course with no problem.

And for USC, every college course you've ever taken, whether it's a pre-req or not, gets factored into your cumulative GPA through OTCAS. So if you do really well on your pre-reqs, you will have a strong pre-req GPA, and your cumulative GPA will also increase. I'm not sure how it works for other California programs, but I believe it's also quite similar. Definitely research each school you're interested in, and contact admissions staff if you need more clarification. Hope that helps!

Ah, thank you, folks. That's good to hear. I've been doing well on my CC courses, and I was worried that I might, well, be wasting my time. Thing is, my schedule is filled to the brim, so community courses are my way to making amends and taking the classes that I kinda need to take but can't in a regular Fall/Spring semester.

Thanks again for clearing this up with me. I'll be sure to contact the programs to see if they're open about it!
