Hello,

I attend UCI and have a 3.485 Cumulative GPA. However, my sciences worry me a bit:

Bio: B+, A-, C+ (And I am currently taking BioChem which might net me another C+/B-)

G-Chem: B-, A-, B+
G-Chem Lab: B+, B

O-Chem: B+, B+, A-
O-Chem Lab: B+, B+, A

Math: C, A-, A-

I have research experience and great letters of recommendation. I shadowed 3 dentists for 100 hours and have work at my family's dental lab as technician for about 8 years. I also have 100 hours of volunteer time in my local community.

I plan on applying in June and hope to take the DAT in July/August.

I guess I am really worried about my possible (C's) in the required Biology classes. I would really hate to shoot myself in the foot by pissing away this last quarter or two of my undergraduate experience with a couple C's in bio classes.

Will a spattering of B-/C+'s destroy my GPA and transcript? What should I aim for on the DAT? Should I even bother applying to Dental School with a few C+/B- in required Bio classes?

I have taken a few advanced chemistry classes as well as additional physics classes. I have a Physical Science GPA of 3.298 and currently my Bio GPA is a 3.1.

I am sorry if this issue has been beaten to death. However, any honest responses would be appreciated.

P.S. I have never had to repeat a class. I never had any "W's" and I currently only have 3 C's on my transcript (1 Bio, 1 Freshman Calc, 1 Epidemiology).

well first off... YAY for repping uci!!!! 🙂 haha.

u could still try to apply for d school. 🙂 when u take the DAT shoot for above 20 all across, preferably 22+ for aa, ts, n pat. n i think u should be good and should be able to get interviews at a few schools... n u mite want to apply to 15 or more... but yea... gl next cycle!!!

Hey there fellow anteater! Don't worry, a few C's aren't going to kill your chances. I got a D in O-chem the first time around and I still got accepted! I also got a C in Biochem (Never should have taken Cumsky), and then another C in Molecular, so don't worry. Just do well in your upper devs, which I personally thought were not only much more interesting, but also easier to do well in. If you're at all concerned, just do well in that area of the DAT, and you'll be able to show that as your real potential, not the one or two bad grades. Oh! And be sure to do research!

Zot, and good luck!

PS. Stop on by an ASDA meeting sometime, I'm an officer!

Thanks for the candor, anteaters!

I will bust my balls trying not to get anymore C's. However, all this hype about dental school went to my head. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences. It really helps.

Vicviper, where and when?

Well, we just had a meeting Wednesday with the Kaplan rep and then a Q&A session about applications and the officers shared some of their interview experiences, so the next meeting is (I think) going to be on Wednesday the 25th. I'm pretty sure we're having an Army Oral Surgeon coming in and talking about his experiences. Send me a PM with your email and I'll add you to the mailing list!
