Hello future docs and colleagues,

I apologize if my question has been repeated multiple times, I've searched around and haven't found the answers I'm quite looking for.

I also posted this in the Allopathic thread-- just trying to get help

I am currently a senior in college and majoring in healths science. My major isnt considered "pre-med," as it doesnt go through the physics, chem, and bio.
The only thing i have complete was the math (1 year of calculus), one year of english, and one year of social sciences.

So what I wanted to know was if there was anyway I can apply to a MD or DO school and go under a provision/conditional acceptance.

My GPA right now is a 3.39...
Although my GPA isn't a 3.9 or 4.0, I have worked in multiple research labs, shadowed, and worked side by side with other doctors. My extra curricular activities is strong.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you

You need to have taken Orgo, Gen Chem, Physics, and Bio prior to starting an DO or MD school. Some people will complete a missing course during their gap year. If you haven't taken any of them, you'll have to wait a year to apply and actually take them. Plus you have to take the MCAT and you'd be better off burning $235 than taking the MCAT without most of those 4 courses completed. Next MCAT is not offered til the end of January.

😕 I don't even see how that would be possible as you need those sciences to get through the MCAT and you need to submit your MCAT score with your applications. I believe this would be a question better directed at a school's admissions office.

Don't let the pre-requisites discourage you, but you will have to finish the majority of them before you apply for a few reasons.

1. The admissions committee will expect to see the majority of them completed before you apply. They do not have to be 100% complete, but if you only have 10% then they wouldn't even give you a second glance.

2. As said above, you will need the subject matter from each of those classes to take the MCAT which is required for every medical school.
(I took the MCAT and I hadn't taken O Chem 2 and I did fine, but I had taken every other pre-req. You will need to take the majority of them to do well.)

Medical school is a long path to begin with, just set your sights back another year and finish those necessary classes. If it is your dream this won't stop you.

What everyone's saying about taking these courses to do well on the MCAT is entirely true. It may not seem like it now, but when you're sitting through the test you will inevitably think "Damn I'm glad I went to class that day."

That being said, Med school isn't completely ruled out for you, but you may have to wait a year to apply. I've never heard of a school accepting someone with the presumption that he/she will defer acceptance for a year to complete prereqs. No to mention it's late in the season to start applications, and I don't think there are any MD schools, and only a handful of DO schools that will accept the Jan. MCAT.

You best bet is to finish your senior year, getting in as many of the prereqs you can. Then finish what you weren't able to in a 9th semester. After you're done with those, I would recommend spending Jan-April studying for the MCAT and buffing up your extra curric's. Get your apps in for the 2012-13 cycle ASAP and I think you'd stand a pretty good chance.

Just my $.02, and best of luck with whatever path you choose to take.

Because people put a higher value on their own opinion rather than the opinions of others.

The best thing for you to do now is to graduate with a good gpa...and get yourself into a linkage program. Both MD and DO programs have them where you will take the required pre med courses you need and then if you maintain a certain gpa and MCAT score while there you are granted admission into the program. This is your best option. Hope that helps.
