Would like to get some input here from some of the experienced members here..

hypothetical:

Pharmacist has a full time job as a primary care clinical specialist for an HMO (like Kaiser Permanente) M-F 8:30-5pm

He/she may have the opportunity to pick up some extra work (8-12 hours a week), working from home on week nights after 5pm or possibly on weekends doing prior authorizations for a medicare advantage plan.

Is this a conflict of interest? This could hypothetically be very helpful for this pharmacist who has many loans to pay.

I know many people are going to suggest speaking to HR, but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks. Should I go to HR? Is it better to ask for forgiveness instead of permission?

Thanks in advance!

Check your contract, employee handbook or policy & procedure manual. If there is nothing in any of them, you should be good to go. It is not a conflict of interest unless you use resources from your day job while performing your night job duties.

yeah i looked at the policy on the hr website..it was confusing as hell..

I don't feel like it should be a big deal. We have staff pharmacists who do PRN work for target and walgreens..

How would this side job be different than working for Target or Walgreens? As long as you're not getting paid for one job while doing the other, I don't think it'd be a problem. But I'd be transparent about it anyway, just because if it comes out that you're hiding it, people might wonder what else you're hiding.

'You' being the hypothetical pharmacist...
