Confused amid all the info!

So I am in need of some weighing of options regarding what to do in my gap year. I am going to be a Senior this Fall, and because of my low gpa (3.187) I thought taking a year off to do research would be a good route to follow. However, I have not taken my MCAT and literally just read about the SPM programs today. Does anyone know of any research fellowship programs for college graduates to pursue? Also, would applying to a research fellowship program be required if I wanted to be more than just a lab technician at a research institute like MD Anderson? I am actually more interested in doing research during my gap year than pursuing another 1-2 years of coursework. Does anyone know how I could go about doing research at an institution like MD Anderson/Baylor college of medicine (for examples)?

A year or two of research won't overcome that GPA.

You need an SMP unless you;
a) get 34+ on the MCAT (everyone says they will, but in reality less than 5% get above a 35)
b) go DO
c) go to the Carib/some other foreign option

Research is an EC; not a GPA compensator
