Hello everyone,
I am a high school senior about to graduate. I decided that I want to go to med schoold and become a doctor. But choosing a major is actually hard for me. At first, I wanted to major in Biology because that seemed like the right thing to do. And I do love Biology.

Then I did some research and asked teachers for advice about some majors. It seems like majoring in something else is better because I will stand out in a pool of bio major.

Now, I know everyone says “just major in something that you love or are interested in,” but I just don’t know what to major in. I did some research on majors like psychology, biochem, English.... But I am getting scared because I don’t know what to major in.

Some reviews say that biochem is really hard. Others say that English has too many papers to write...
Could anyone help me decide please?

Step 1: enter college and take a semester of classes

Then decide what you like. Your major is one of the least important things about your med school app. If you love bio, major in bio

Look at the majors offered at your school and the required courses for each major. Look at the course descriptions of those courses. Try to see yourself in each of those majors. Do most or all of the courses required feel exciting and interesting? As you go down the list from Anthropology to Zoology you might find something that sounds like a good fit. Regardless of what you need to take in freshman year for your major, take General Chemistry I and II. Do not place out of intro chem and take organic chem as a freshman. Everything else should/will fall into place in due time.

Here are my two cents

Major in something you ENJOY. This will lead to you being more INTRINSICALLY motivated and thus doing better.

Another thing to consider is, don't pursue a major that you think will help you get into medical school. You are still young and you may change your mind. Would you be satisfied with a Bio degree on its own, if you decided in your junior year that medical school is NOT for you?

Also a side note. You'll hear people talk about majoring in Psych, English, etc. But in my opinion that is a bad idea. When applying to med school, you have a cGPA and an sGPA. The sGPA is BCPM (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math).

If you major in something NON-science related (like Psych, or English), then your science GPA is ONLY contingent upon the med school prerequisites and Genetics, Biochem, etc. Psychology courses do NOT count towards your GPA... If you major in something science related, then you will have lots of upper divisions to raise your science GPA...

NOT saying you'll need to raise your sGPA, but some people's sGPA is contingent upon Gen Chem, Bio, Orgo, Biochem, and Genetics, Physics,

As mentioned earlier, major in something you enjoy and something YOU WOULD BE OK WITH IF YOU DECIDED TO NOT PURSUE MEDICAL SCHOOL... Be careful with Psych, because Psych courses do NOT count towards sGPA.

Take some science courses and eventually you can see what you enjoy the most.

Thank you for the advice. So, I should take General Chemistry I and II my freshman year?

Thank you so much. This is a great advice and I will definitely take it into consideration.

Yes. It is required for medical school. It is required for many other health professions, too (if you should change your mind and decide to go into dentistry, etc) and if you go in an entirely different direction, it will fulfill the science requirement for graduation.
