I had to leave my residency for personal reasons. I finished 2.5 yrs. I'd like to apply for PGY 3.

Two q's do I go through ERAS?

Can I redo PGY 2 even though I completed it due to more spots?

Or would I be better off trying to switch specialties and applying for PGY 1?

any advice?

If you are staying in the same field, and you completed more than one year in a categorical program, it would behoove you to find open slots for your level of training via FindAResident.com or by calling programs or checking websites that are frequented by people in your field. Having said that, I believe there is nothing precluding you from starting from scratch and applying to ERAS. Anyone else with more info?

You don't go through ERAS.

Have you contacted your original program? Perhaps they have room to take you back. If you left your program on less than optimal terms, then this won't be an option.

You can redo your PGY-2, but you run into the Medicare funding clock problem in the PGY-3. This is not "your" problem, but the program's problem. Still, they may not offer you a PGY-2 because of it.

If you want to switch specialties, then you use ERAS and the match, although you would be free to sign outside the match as an independent applicant.
