Hi everyone,
I'm currently a senior and will graduate in May 2011. I want to be enrolled in an SMP program for the fall of 2011. Is it too late to apply?

I'm interested in the GEMS program and have some questions;

On there website under "Notes" it says the AMCAS 2011 must be filled by November 2010 & have a MCAT test date between Jan. & Sept. 2010, but it also says the Gems application will be available on February,15 2001.

1)Are these both required for admission?

2)When sending my AMCAS application do I send it to Georgetown School of Medicine?

3)If I have not taken my MCAT or filled my AMCAS application is it too late for 2011 admission?

* Can someone give me an outline of the application process for someone wanting to enter an SMP for the fall 2011

Thank you for your help

i thought SMPs don't start accepting apps till december/january? if that's the case then i think you're okay.

Most of the post-bacc/smp program applications for fall 2011 aren't due until next spring. Most of the programs I'm applying to are due in late-April or later.

SMPs like Georgetown & EVMS started accepting apps this month.

For any competitive program you'd be wise to apply as early as possible. If you apply at the deadline you're applying for the waitlist.

Best of luck to you.

Hmm. I'm sending in everything but my MCAT in January, and then taking the March MCAT and plan on sending in the scores as soon as I get them. Too late you think?

It depends - if you have rock star stats then no; if not then yes

Gotta do what you gotta do. Don't rush the MCAT - make your first score your best score.

You can try to buy yourself some time by taking the GRE and using those scores as a placeholder. But don't put any time into GRE prep instead of MCAT prep.

I hope you're successful getting in quickly. But, personally I'd be willing to wait a year to get into a solid SMP that advertises a strong med school acceptance rate for its grads, and preferably, puts you through the first year of med school, sitting with med students (Gtown, EVMS, Cincinnati, Tufts, Temple, a few more). There are a ton of programs that are happy to take your money and give you a one year bio grad degree, without improving your chances of getting into med school.

Also, v. happy that Cincinnati is adding gross anatomy. Hard to beat that program now...

Best of luck to you.

DrMidlife: You said Gems starts accepting apps this month, but their website says otherwise:

"Applications for the 2011-2012 GEMS Program will be available starting February 15, 2011. "

?? Can anyone clear this up?

Hey VanessAssenaV,

What Dr midlife is referring to is the SMP program at Georgetown, who take some classes with the GEMS, and the SMP applications can be sent in now, BUT NOT the GEMS. The Gems application does not open until February 15, and you MUST have a submitted amcas (to any school, not necessarily georgetown) and MUST have an MCAT score on hand before you apply. If you have those ready then send the application in whenever you're ready, don't rush it, they review all the applications at the same time anyway.

Oh and I'm a current gems so any other questions, just pm me. Good Luck
