Guys I need your opinion here. How is Columbia's clinical experience? I am 99.9 % not ready to do specialization. I have already got accepted at another school w/h claims, they are one of the best clinical schools in the nation. But The Ivy thing is tempting me and people around me aka friends and family. I just wanna go straight to practice, not specialization.

Does w/h school you go really mater in Dentistry?

I know there old threads like this but I need your new opinion!

Agreed. Where else were you accepted? If it's cheaper then go there. Dental school sucks-it's a universal truth.

Yes I am accepted at Creighton. I am confused what to do. Creighton is good in Clinical and they don't have any residency/Specialization programs. That is there brand. They feel and say DDS students see all patients from simple to the most complicated cases.

Hard to tell with Columbia, they just revised their curriculum I assume to bring in clinical earlier. Either school will prepare you very well. Columbia obviously has the advantage of more options to specialize, but if you're sure that you won't, then I would advise you to look into which area would suit you best and which gave you a better impression at your interview. I don't know about Creighton, but I know Columbia is tougher than a lot of schools didactically in case that is not your thing.

Omaha, NE must cost less to live in than NY, NY. Save money now. You can always decide to specialize later.

Hey,
If I were you, I wouldn't get caught up on the whole "Ivy vs. Non-Ivy." Literally, it doesn't matter at all. Go ask the dentists that you shadowed how many times they've been asked where they went to DS (in a measuring-up kinda' way), and they will probably give you an answer on one of their hands. You will save some serious dough by choosing Creighton, and you will get a really solid education. Let us know what you decide!

Yep, no plan of specialization. Man i am a bit too old for that, I am over 30! no kidding! I just want to dive to the real world straight out of school. My thing is, I can't stand friends and family push to join the Ivy schools.

Defiantly do the cheaper one, you have less earning potential then a younger student.

Hey,
Just remind them that they aren't the ones that'll be paying your horrendous student loan payments...
Take a look at the cost of attendance for the two schools, compare the difference and remember the general rule that for every dollar you borrow, you pay three back.... That'll likely make your decision easier.
Also, you aren't exaclty a spring chicken...don't spend the rest of your life indebted to the man because of your family's desire for you to attend an ivy.

It may in some small obnoxiuos way matter to your peers, who you will see at meetings and conferences. Even the Harvard guys never put down the other Ivy grads. My two cents and I would go wherever I felt more comfortable. Omaha and NYC are worlds apart.

Finally, I decide to stay in Omaha, turning down 40 k scholarship from Columbia! 10 k for each year for four years. I hope I will not regret by my decision. Hope Creighton will give the skills I need to be GP!

Good choice. My friend went to creighton and had great clinical skills when he came out because they get to do fairly complicated cases, no fear of grads taking away harder stuff. I went to michigan, good reputation but hard to get complicated cases because we would have to share or give to grads. Like harder endo or perio, goodbye. My creighton friend got to do much more than we ever did and it might be an advantage when just graduating. In the end though, patients almost never ask where you went to school.

any school will give you the skills you need to be a GP, otherwise you wouldn't be able to graduate 🙂 Creighton is an excellent choice, IMO.

yea, i worked for a dentist who graduated from UT Houston and his son went to Creighton. He said, in Creighton you get exposed to lot more cases and different types of procedures because school trains you to become a dentist who can handle many different cases due to lack of dentist in the state and not many specialists compared to big city/state schools where referring would be a better option.
