Why is it that when you ask a physician to shadow him or her they act as if they have no idea what you are talking about? This has happened to me on every request to shadow. I was under the impression that every med student had done some type of shadowing?

No doctor doesn't know what shadowing is.

I'm guessing it's user error.

It's a term we would not have used before the 90's.
It's concept we would not have used before the 80's.
