Hey what up guys?

I need a bit of advice. Here's my situation:

I am a Chemistry major, Adapted Aquatics minor in my 4th year in SUNY. My CUM GPA is a 3.06 with my overall science at a staggering 2.7. I wish to apply soon, but dont' know if I should do so with the grades I have now. Going to take the MCATs in April if I'm ready, but latest would be August. My question is, should I take the MCATs, see how I do in them, with the grades that I have and apply, or should I post-bacc for 2 years, bring up my science GPA and then take the MCATs? Oh, and another bone to toss in, what are my chances of getting into a post bacc program? I hear some have a merge with a medical school where they promise you an interview if you excel in the program...

I appreciate the help guys, thanks again.

It really all depends on trends in gpa. Have you had a really strong showing (3.7+) for at least the last year? Are you doing well this year and plan on taking a heavy load next semester? Will you do well next semester? Unless your answers are yes to these questions, I would not apply in the next cycle. You will probably need to do a post-bacc, but assuming you've already compelted the pre-reqs and a lot of upper levels (Micro, Molecular Bio, Biochem) you dont have many undergrad post-bacc options. Plus you will absolutely need a really good MCAT score to have a chance anywhere. Really good is 32+, maybe 33+ for you. Your BCMP is going to tank any chances you have this coming cycle.

Your best bet is probably to complete an SMP program at Drexel or BU (I dont think Georgetown will accept you as they require MCAT's and by the time yours arrive, it will probably be too late. They consider late applications, but from what I understand, only if your numbers are high) Anyway, complete the BU or Drexel programs, and *then* apply.

Regarding post bacc programs, some do exist to help science majors make themselves more competitive. Drexel was mentioned, and PCOM has a program with this goal in mind. Check them out.

My GPA showed a substantial increase for the past year and a half. But it was hard to maintain because I took BioChem along with 2 other science classes this past semester, which may bring it down just a little bit. I still have a bit of time left in school as mentioned before but just for tedious classes not pertaining to my major to be allowed to graduate. I was planning to retake some of the pre-med reqs to bring the grades up and show them that I can do it... after all this time. Will that help, showing that I can do the work, but of course, with a gleaming MCAT score?

What's a SMP? I've heard of those... how will that help my chances of getting in?

Thanks people.
