Hi, I'm an International Medical graduate, I'm doing research in radio, recently I met a faculty in radiation oncology, who encouraged me to work with him & do research, I was told that a person who did 1 yr research in RADS onc last yr matched into it. I dont mind stepping into rad onc research & doing it for 6-8 months, my question is if I apply both into radio & radiation oncology programs this yr at the same university would it have a negative impact??
Does applying into different fields in the same university is something not to be done???😕
Any suggestions

Radiology and radiation oncology are very different fields. I would suggest finding a way to decide between the two fields and applying to only one. Applying to both radiology and radiation oncology is sort of like applying to both ophthalmology and dermatology. Rightly or wrongly, it makes it seem as if you are applying to lucrative fields without regard to what you'll actually be doing day to day.

disagree. while they are very different fields if you understand the differences and like both, there is nothing wrong to applying to both. however if one is considered a "backup" you should be aware that they are both competititve and radiology should not be considered a "gimme" for an IMG. good luck.

I was never like those who are born with " clear concept of what they have to do in Life". I'm a person who wud like to explore. I wasn't interested in radiology till last year, Until I started working in this dept as a research specialist. I guess we all need exposure to get to know what we want. & If you think I'm after lucrative field, I would accept that. I guess there's nothing wrong in it. I have seen radiology procedures very closely spending 8 hrs every day for an year, thats how i developed an interest. When I was sort of invited to be a part of research in Radiation oncology dept, I thought it could be an opportunity to know what the hell is it....
To be true I never had a radiation oncology posting in my medical school. So may be I'm a deprived one but I never really got exposed to it...

My basic confusion was IS IT A WRONG/NOT TO BE DONE kind of a thing If you apply to different fields at the same place? dO THEY GET TO KNOW IF YOU APPLY TO DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS IN THE SAME UNIVERSITY???

& Radiology isn't a back up, Stephew!!! 🙂

well if radiology isnt a back up im not quite sure what youre doing. That is are you saying you want to only do radonc if you get certainly places or radiology if you dont? i think that's the bigger issue.

to answer your question, i would not apply to radonc and radiology at the same institution. although it may be safe, you may get 'dinged' in the end.

it is my understand there is no way to 'know' if you applied to both, but usually for US grads, the school (ie dean) would know that you are applying to both specialties, and he may alert the pd's. also, if you are doing research in both depts in the same hospital, it may alert them to contact each other to f/u on your projects.

xrtindy, i agree with you regarding your statements (except the one about the $$$). i could never understand why people would apply to rads and radonc...the lack of patient care vs. aspects of oncology (sick patients/palliation/etc) are a major component of each of the fields. the biggest thing they have in common is that we both use CT scanners and the lifestyles are very similar.
