So I found the following profile today while trawling around MD Apps:
"Age: 22
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: African-American
Home State: CA
Undergraduate Institution: California State University, Long Beach
Area of Study:Biological/Life Sciences
Application Year: 2008
MCAT Score: VR 7, PS 12, BS 10, R
BCPM GPA: 3.34
Overall GPA: 3.35

Brief Profile:
A bunch of stuff. HS valedictorian, pre-med club officer, 2 years infectious disease research, a bunch of honor societies, NIH grant, hospice volunteer, some more stuff.
I also have some pretty strong LORs.
One is from the person that founded Kwanzaa, I took a class with him called Ethnic Experience in the U.S., made sure to get an A and then I attended a lot of his functions.
He also hooked me up with the Chair of the California Committee on Health, and I got a letter from him too.
Another is from my undergraduate advisor. I took Hematology, Bio of human aging and Communities in the health professions with her, and got all As.
Another one is from the Dean of the microbio department. I took two classes with him, mycology/parasitology, and Emergining and re-emerging infectious diseases. I got As in both.

Also, I went from a 2.8 my first two years to a 4.0 for my last two years. So there wasn't really an upward trend, just a hault to the mitigating situation.

MCAT: Not sure what happened with the verbal, weeeiiirrrddd. *sigh* I think the rest of my app is strong enough to get me into some places.

There is also a tremendous amount of racist vitriol, true and fair debate, and blind praise for the applicant's successes. I would like to initiate a fair and balanced forum for commentary on the merits of his application, the unusual number of interviews/acceptances/scholarships from high end schools, and the merits/existence/necessity of affirmative action. I would like to add the caveat that I am not a racist, or a hater. I got into a great school that I am really happy about, and am waiting to hear about a few more. I just thought that this was a really interesting idea, controversial or not. If you're so politically correct that talking about this bothers you, please take it somewhere else.

Lots of stuff

*Correction* 68% of applicants are within one SD of the AAMC stats so he lies within the 32% that don't. Same thing still applies you never know whats going to happen. Besides congrats to him I wish I had that many acceptances 🙂

Be careful about whose MDApps you discuss on here. Some of those profiles belong to regular posters here on SDN.

This is one of those times. Let's be supportive of our fellow posters.

Yeah I've seen that MDApp somewhere on here...heh

The said mdapps belongs to someone who is a regular poster here on SDN. If you wanted to discuss this, it would have been better to discuss on their profile.

Sorry, did I break some unspoken rule? Is it wrong to discuss this? If so, why?

This is not a good idea

This is not an interesting idea, more like a completely inappropriate one.

As if an MDApps is going to give you a full picture... people are just going to pick out what they want to see and attack or praise that small component. This thread will provide absolutely no extra useful information for anyone.

Sorry, did I break some unspoken rule? Is it wrong to discuss this? If so, why?

It's just a matter of being respectful. The profile belongs to a regular poster on SDN and his success is something to congratulate and not criticize.

That's actually somebody's profile that regularly posts here.

This is not an interesting idea, more like a completely inappropriate one.

Ok, I'll bite. Can someone please tell me why this is not interesting or appropriate? I am genuinely curious; sorry to be ignorant on internet posting etiquette. Have I offended someone? If so, how?

I don't understand why people can't focus on themselves and their stats to get them into medical school instead of feeling the need to discuss about someone else. What they do doesn't affect you, let it go and get a life.

If you want to have an all out definitive discussion on race & the admissions process then go ahead and start a thread on affirmative action (there are about 12/month in this forum so you would not be the first or last one to do so). But in pulling a particular mdapps it becomes a discussion on a particular individual's qualifications for admission, of which YOU have no experience to judge. If you did you would be on the Adcom of some med school. Any discussion we can have on this one app would be purely anecdotal and could not possibly take into account the various random things that medical schools account for or look for in an applicant.

May God have mercy on ur soul. Leave the poor guy alone OP, he gets enough grief on other threads.

You're discussing someone who posts here regularly. That's the internet version of trying to talk about someone behind their back while you're in the same room.

I hardly ever post here. I do have a life, but I have to work at the lab on X-mas eve and am bored now. Something wrong with that? I think that a priori attacks are uncalled for; I do not criticize the applicant's successes, I merely think that affirmative action is a very interesting issue, especially when it comes to medicine. If we cannot discuss this openly and honestly, there is something wrong with our society....

First of all, because it is a regular poster. How would you like it if you were to come onto these forums and see some random person posting all your application for the world to see, and then seeing more random people attacking your accomplishments. What did he do to you that made him deserve more extreme scrutiny? Trust me, he's had enough of that already.

Second, because this is another thinly disguised AA thread. Just do a quick search and you'll see we've had a ton of those in the past two weeks.

I actually have a better idea, why don't you post your mdapps and I'll start a new thread about whether or not you are qualified to get into a medical school!

Not so much now it is?

yeah. Let's not go there. And he's a nice guy. Very supportive of other people on SDN.

I'm going to assume that he rocked all his interviews... he does have personality. You all have to understand that there are some people who will ALWAYS make the cut once they get interviewed because they got it like that.

OK... I started to comment. Not what I intended. But I couldn't help it. What I meant to say was...

Folks, let's not start bashing on him. And since he posts regularly, I think its pretty rude to pull his profile off MDApplicants and start a discussion about him without in some way asking if he would be OK with it or AT LEAST letting him know that his entire campaign to pursue his dream is about to be bashed by all the haters on SDN. One of you moderators PLEASE come in and put a stop to this before it gets out of hand.

As I stated, it's just a matter of respect. This particular applicant has had a lot of success and it's disrespectful to criticize him based on stats.

You're not trying to discuss affirmative action. You're trying to discuss a regular poster's profile who you don't know and just make assumptions about them. Why does this matter to you?

And what's up w/ your title? Why does he deserve 'condemnation'? Did he cheat to get in? Did he lie to his LOR writers? NO. Nobody deserves condemnation for success if it is achieved through honest means.

There are PLENTY of AA threads you could/should have dug up before starting this thread to discuss a single individuals stats who happens to be well known on this forum. That being said lets stop bumping this thread up and maybe it will float away 🙂 ..........

Discussing AA is one thing. Using an SDN member's MDApps profile in the discussion in order to fan the fire is another. It's just disrespectful.

And your title?!! "Congrats or condemnation?!?!?!?"!!!!!!

Dude, all I can do is pray for you.

If you wanted a debate about race/affirmative action/whatever, you shouldn't have dragged this particular member into your thread, or any other for that matter. It's obvious you have a beef (regardless what you say on this board).

regardless of the fact that this person is a normal poster on this site, why even seek to start such commentary? You do realize you are seeking a dialogue that is not possible in this forum. And why do you care to discuss something that has already been covered ad nauseum.

I could care less about being politically correct (especially on this in this crazy forum). However, I do care about people who want to focus so much more on other people's accomplishments (or lack thereof) rather than on their own.

Go have a beer or something...or a good glass of bubbly

This kid has had much success in this process, and if he is not ready he will flunk out. If he is ready...well then good for him.

so true...this fool is trying to put on a PC facade when all he really wants to do is elicit trolling and character bashing
