One of my friends worked under a campaign for a year and his campaign team got a congressman elected in a district. The funny this is...he is a pre-med student but for some reason he has a year of working in a campaign under his belt. Is that even useful for med schools? And now February of 2013 he is given a chance to join an official "congressional internship" in which case he can work at the congressman's office...so what should he do? He already did the internship with the congressman for a year, so should he continue it or is it useless? His reasoning for doing this is that he "connected with the candidate and that's what motivates him to persue this goal" such that they are useful to him when he is a doctor and that's how he plans to tell the admission officers at med schools. So my final question is...Should he continue this internship? If so why and how can he make this relevant in his med school app? Thank You all for reading this long summary and taking some time from your lives to answering. Love you 😛

I think it looks good to show a continued interest in a single field (like volunteering at a shelter for 3 years as opposed to random group of 3 month activities).

Speaking to the internship issue, I majored in political science in undergrad (including interning in a congressional office), then went back and did the pre-med thing. Most of the interviewers I have talked with thought the political end was interesting. I tied it to medicine in that I interned during the health care debate, which was very intense.

Anyways. I do not know about making "powerful connections," and I don't think it would hurt his resume.

some people man... some people

It definitely helps the app cause it shows positive qualities. Everything you do does not have to be related to medicine. I did a little campaign stuff for a guy running for congress as well. But the reasons your friend is doing it are best kept to himself. He should just say, "I truly believed in the candidates values and goals"..bla bla.

I asked him the same question...I think I understood him wrong b/c he doesn't seem to be the guy that would do stuff for a selfish reason such as connections, but you know when I created this forum I wanted to show him how he wasted a year doing random stuff. I was pretty furious, but according to you guys it doesn't look so bad and sorry for exaggerating about the connections thing, it's not fair to him and I have to take a 3rd person perspective rather than blurring out opinionated stuff on a whim especially when I'm the one trying to give advice.
