I absolutely do not want to offend anyone here. But, I'm kind of a liberal and want to avoid applying/interviewing at D.O. Schools that are ultra-concervative and/or have dress codes. Which schools are more casual and laid back? I'd appreciate any feedback.

Definitely avoid VCOM. People there get tattled on by their own classmates for wearing the wrong kind of shoes. Oh, and then there's
this whole mess, which you may have already seen.

Geez what is this for you.....bash VCOM week? Get over it.

If you don't want to dress in a professional manner and want to dress in a more relaxed manner, then don't come to VCOM or any other school where there is a dress code. The dress code is well published and won't be a surprise when you get here if you so choose to come here.

Thanks for the input. Like I said, I'm not trying to offend. I'm sure VCOM is great school, as well are most.

I am currently an undergrad at ohio university and would say that athens is a pretty liberal town and the medical school here seems pretty laid back..i like the atmosphere here a lot...but thats just one school.

Was my statement false in any way? No, it wasn't. So YOU get over it. I answered the original poster's question honestly and succinctly and you consider that 'bashing?' Why exactly does the truth bother you so much? Anyway, I don't want to clutter up this thread with more arguing so if you have anything further to say to me, it might be good to use email or PM.

I would say AZCOM is the perfect definition of a moderate school. About 40% of our class comprises of Mormon students but then we have a fair number of gay/lesbian students and faculty. At AZCOM, you have the LDS club and the Rainbow club. AZCOM is definitely not a liberal school but it is more liberal than many DO schools.

I can't speak on behalf of Mormons in general but the Mormon population at AZCOM do not push their religious views in any manner possible. They are religious but show respect and tolerance toward those of other faiths. Although I'm liberal, I have grown to respect and love many of my Mormon classmates.

The only time you feel the conservative element at AZCOM is when you are trying to sponsor alcohol related events on the school campus or when you are organizing post-exam partying groups. At most medical schools, it's a given that most of the class will partake in these parties but at AZCOM only a small number students will go out drinking after exams.

TUCOM, COMP, NYCOM, NECOM, MSU, CCOM, and Nova are the only DO schools that I would qualify as being liberal. Most of the others are conservative. AZCOM and maybe OUCOM are the only schools you could qualify as truly being moderate.

novacek88 and shakeit: That's more like what I was looking for. Thanks.

I can put a bit of a word in about NSU. We do have a dress code, it is scrubs. This is well published. If you are specifically looking for a school with NO dress code, this isn't the place for you. From my little experience with our class, a dress code is necessary in order to keep people from showing up on campus in their beach wear (not something most schools have to worry about). :-D

If you are looking for something liberal--you wouldn't be far from home here. Ft. Lauderdale has (I think) the 4th largest Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Bi-Sexual population in the U.S.

...Keep in mind, we are considered professional students so the whole "professionalism" thing is going to be something that almost all schools do (or should) be pushing.

why so many mormons at azcom? is it just because of the proximity to utah? my top choices so far are comp and ccom, so i'm glad to see them on the liberal list.

LECOM - Erie / Bradenton are also very conservative (enforced dress code policy, etc.)

LECOM takes their dress code really, really seriously. At my interview they said if we were to show up w/o a tie we would be given one or sent home.

That hasn't stopped anyone! You still wear sneakers, and some girls still have their guts hanging out of shirts that are 2 sizes too small. I'm gonna have to go tell again!

no dress code at MSU, and I laugh at the idea of having to sit through four to eight hours of lecture in a shirt and tie. seriously, you are paying to be there, you might as well be comfortable in the process... you are going to be playing dress-up the rest of your life (keep in mind a fair number of us already had real jobs and wore the garb everyday for some time before school). heck, if you were to have a dress code you would have to force people to come to class... pick whatever school you want, but examine why on this wonderful green earth a school should be telling you how you can dress (except for lab).

OP, go to CCOM. I dress in the dark. For prom at my high scool I had the same tux as Lloyd Christmas and had my brother put a bowl on my head and give me a haircut when he was drunk. I plan to duplicate this feat for orientation

What about DMU-Com or UNECOM or PCOM?

Man, only a couple more weeks until I get to rag on you in person.

CCOM is the best.

thanks.

huh...what!?!?... how do you guys survive? med students with no alcohol? blasphemous!

anyway i go to lecom-bradenton and they're pretty conservative on their policies, like the business dress code. but i like dressing up, so its not a bother for me. although i would love to wear flip-flops to school. oh and also i think because we are in sunny happy florida, the staff and faculty are more lax about the rules than up in erie, where its cold and dark and the water is green. 😛

I would say that UNECOM is very liberal. I've never been to any schools outwest so I cant compare it to those. I interviewed at LECOM PA two years ago and UNECOM is much more laid back. There is a dress code for preceptorship days (shirt/tie/shoes etc) but this is only once or twice a month and is helpful since you are interacting with real patients.

Hope that helps.

Don't sweat the small stuff ........ like menstration. 😀

Here is COMP's:

Lecture: sandals/slippers
Anatomy: closed toes shoes (for your own good)
Clinical: Shirt & Tie (ladies formal - not sure what that is)
OMM: Shorts and Tshirt

(sucks when you have these on same day b/c you often have to change in middle of the day)

Pretty liberal though....

NYCOM is completely liberal with dress. Except for OMM lab and closed toed shoes in anatomy, you can wear WHATEVER you want.

OSU-COM's dress code is determined by the students themselves, and is related to professional attire at a professional school.

It is unrelated to the "conservativeness" of the school.

It is also a poor reason to choose a school.

Our dress "code" consists of scrub pants and a t-shirt by the way.

Everyday comfort level is an important factor... was for me anyways. I also noticed that some of the schools with dress codes had lots of other rules like no eating/drinking in the class room, mandatory attendance at all classes. I need my coffee in class, and lets face it... some lecturers suck.

Yes, we have a rule posted: "no eating or drinking in the classroom."

I'm currently sitting in the classroom.....and I'm eating.

The rules are a bit more flexible in medical school than you would otherwise imagine.
