There is a note on the health canada website that the fields of medicine which will be approved in 2016 for a statement of need are to be made public in july 2015. The reason behind this I suppose is to let students know in plenty of time what will be approved and what will not. if you intend to apply for a residency in the US in 2016, you would be wise to check that announcement when it is made. I can only speculate what would be approved, and what would not, yet my sense is there will be more limits, especially for subspecialties (called fellowships in the US). If you apply for something that is not supported, and the information is public before you apply for the residency anyway, you could find yourself in a sticky situation.
