hi,

i need some help from you guys. im considering getting my BS and applying to dental school. the only thing im scared of is the selection process. ive been calling around to different schools. they usually say we get about 1500 applicants and we accept 60. my 1st yr at undergrad wasnt too good. I was going through " i wanna have my fun " phase at the time. now, im getting serious about dentistry. i was also considering D.C. yes i know they are two different careers haha. do any of you have D.C. friends or family members? what do they say? please, any advice would be nice. thanks in advance

It may seem scary that so many people are applying for such a limited number of seats. But you have to remember that each person is applying to multiple schools. For instance, I applied to 9 (check my profile). If you are concerned about your grades, I suggest you do a post-bac program or get a masters to help you chances. If you don't think you have time for those, then just do really well on your DATs. A lot of students get into great programs like Columbia with "low" gpas since they balance their grades with super high DAT scores.

Hope that helps.

What's a D.C. by the way?

D.C. = doctor of chiropractor

Oh okay, I don't know anything about chiropracting. Any takers?

Personally, I prefer the Thai Massage.

chiropractor and dentist or worlds apart. two totally different fields. by the way. does anyone know why chiropractors are not listed on the forums?

i got a C in chemistry my freshman year and dropped out of calculus II (ended up taking it the next year). then i got serious starting my junior year and took atleast 18 credits of hard classes and pulled mostly As. if you want it it will happen for you. im not one of those brain students what so ever (as you can see from my stats) but i still got in somewhere. dont worry go for it. i didnt party or anything my freshman year but it was just a big step going to east as hell high school to being a bio major. good luck :luck: :luck:

does it matter what school you get your BS from?

I've never heard anyone use the word doctor and chiropractor in the same sentence before. Dental school is 100 times harder to get into than chiropractic. You have to be committed to even have a chance.

oh ya, i agree with you on the fact that dental school is harder to get into. but one thing i dont undersand is why people bash chiropractors soo much lol

Because they are basically an advanced massage therapist. They are closer related to an acupuncturist then an MD.

Chiropractic care is a system of health care that is based on the belief that many health problems can be prevented and treated using spinal adjustments which are believed to be the cause of much disease. The chiropractic profession emphasizes the importance of healthy lifestyles but does not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. For decades, the American Medical Association (AMA) conducted a boycott of chiropractic care claiming the practice was "unscientific".

not to bash chiropractors, i don't know enough about what they do. from personal experience, i do know that back in undergrad i spent some time debating other fields and made the mistake of calling a couple d.c. schools. for the next few months i got constant phone calls trying to get me to apply. they didn't care if i had a degree, any experience, or could even spell the word, and told me i could start whenever i wanted to (fall, spring, summer). there was something desperate about the whole experience that really turned me off. like they had to give my # to a salesman to try and con me into going through with a scam. it's kinda like chasing girls, you want to feel like you're getting something you had to work for. to continue with the analogy, perhaps the fact that i couldn't even get a call back from most dental schools was just the motivation i needed!

of course this is a ridiculous notion to base your career path on, but it was a step in the right direction to finding my particular career of interest (not convenience).

did you guys like going to the dentist when you were younger, or even now? because i know i didnt and thats why im debating on going into dentistry. i need all the help i can get. so please help lol

I didn't like going to the dentist when I was younger because I had to have a lot of my primary teeth pulled since my adult teeth would always come in before I lost the primarys. I had like 13 teeth pulled! Plus I am not much of a needle person. After switching dentists it wasn't too bad though. I never have had a cavity or anything, so never any tramatic dentistry after childhood. What really got me liking going to the dentist was going to the orthodontist. The doctor was really awesome and had great staff and a very non-intimidating open facility. The doctor was such a great guy that I decided that I want to be a dentist too! I really liked the orthodontic experience, and have liked going to the dentist ever since.

I was a class II, with expander, and 1.5 years of braces. My jaw got dislocated when they took the expander out from all the pressure! My mouth was stuck open for like 20 min. Didn't feel anything though strangley, no pain at all. Went to the oral surgeon across the street, he popped my jaw back into the socket, and I was good to go. Weird experience, but I found it more interesting and neat than negative. Still loved dentistry even after that.

You need to kick ass in your next 3 years, then you will be ok. Some schools will drop your lowest year. Schools like to see a rising GPA each year as well.

I have a close friend that became a chiropractor and he failed out of undergrad 3 times.... and besides if you really need any type of adjustments made you should see a doctor of Osteopathic medicine anyway.... they not only learn about manipulation of bone but also of the connective tissue as well as everything else a normal doctor does. They also learn about manipulation for all 4 years whereas I think a chiropractor only does about 2 years of learning about manipulation. Even though my friend is a nice guy... do you really think I would trust him doing anything to my back whenhe couldn't even get through basic bio?
