I got into a pharmacy program two years ago and had the option within those two years if I wanted to stick to it or look for something else. Well, I was extremely indecisive in these past two years and had a difficult time settling on exactly what I wanted to do, so I stuck to it. I realize I'm not the only one because some of my classmates are in the same boat. As of now, I'm going to be a P1 in the upcoming semesters and am looking into options in pharmacy besides retail, hospital or clinical. I'm considering getting an MSE in chemical engineering so that I can have a broader scope in my study to include pharmaceutical engineering/biochemical engineering. I have heard this is not an uncommon pathway as UMich has a PharmD/ChemEng MSE joint program.

If any of you have experience or have looked into pharmaceutical engineering/chemical engineering, I have some questions for you:

1. What is the work environment like? Who do you work with? I know this field does not directly involve patients, but I'm assuming there must be a team that works together on projects. Who else gets involved in making the primary decisions for the development of the product? I read somewhere that a mechengineering student worked with a lady who needed a prosthetic leg to better develop his product. How often can you get involved with projects of that nature? Just wanted to get an overview.

2. What are some of the type of projects you can get involved in?

3. How can you gain experience/insight about pharmaceutical engineering?

Your responses are kindly appreciated.

I have a friend who's finishing his masters in chem eng this fall. I'll ask him if he's had any interaction of this kind, but I think he primarily does electrical/nuclear stuff. Still, I'll check.

I did Chem Eng as one of my final year subjects. Tried to get a job in antibiotic production but told they were looking for pure chem engs with some biological knowledge, not the other way round. Did find very useful when I was walking around factories and some one was impressed that I knew what a votator was.
