I am a 22 y/o M with a strong interest in Dentistry. In fact, my mom works in a dental office and I have been exposed to dentistry from a young age.

Here are a few questions that maybe could be answered.

1. How do schools generally view retakes? I have a few and would like to know how the GPA is calculated.

2. How do schools generally view CC classes?

3. What do you think I should know, lol.

thanks for all your help!

Not all schools accept cc classes. So check with the schools you are interested in. The best advice is to do well on the DAT and make sure you shadow a dentist. Good luck!

Strong interest in dentistry you say? Really...

since you have a "strong interest in dentistry," why did you apply to DO schools?
i think it's a fair question since you'd probably get that question from an adcom.

Very reasonable.

Haven't applied to DO school, but did start heading that way a year or so ago. Within past few months I have become interested in the other healthcare fields including dentistry and optometry. I have yet to decide which avenue to pursue. I have an interest in medicine and have been exposed to it through EMS. However, growing up in a family with heavy interest in dentistry has made me very interested in it as well. I have about a year to decide which way I want to go, and this just happens to be an excellent source of info.

Hope that helps clarify.

Wow,

Considering I have not even come close to applying to any grad school, let alone finished my pre-reqs, I find it very strange that you would label me a med school reject. I have even yet to take my MCAT or any other test. I would greatly appreciate you either being more thoughtful in the future. Otherwise, stay out of a convo if you have no constructive comments.

Wow, you're very mature and you add so much value to a thread.
It's appalling to even think of some people like you entering the dental profession, God forbid.

To answer the op:
1) Most schools don't mind retakes, just as long as you get an A or a B the second time and you aren't repeating it a bunch of times
2) CC classes are highly unfavorable. Although there is a good amount of schools that do accept it, they simply don't like it. They would rather admit students who went to a university. I don't think retaking the prereqs at a university would be necessary, but taking upper-level bio courses at a university and getting As in them would definitely show the adcoms that you are capable of intense science classes.
3) Since you didn't apply to medical schools or taken the MCAT, dental schools don't know that you had plans of being a doctor. They may ask you why you spent so much time volunteering in the hospital, etc. but as long as you shadow a dentist you're fine.

GPA is below average. Need a good DAT score. One must shadow. Schools like tufts have no love for CC requirements.

Dental is harder admission wise than D.O. schools. FYI

definately true.... DO is easier to get in than DDS
anyways, only TUFTS are picky about CC classes so dont worry too much
Just get 20 or above on DAT and do some volunteer work and you will have some kind of chance
