I'm considering taking an Army or Navy HPSP right now, and I want to ask about the additional military opportunities outside the scope of medicine that come with these programs.

1. Is it possible to go through anything like basic traning or (gasp) Ranger school while on HPSP after medical school?
2. Is sidearm/rifle training possible?
3. Is hand to hand combat training possible? (I already train BJJ as a civilian)
4. Is it feasible to train the above during the internship year before a GMO tour?
5. Is it feasible to come back to residency "later" after I get my kicks with the rest of the military experience?
6. What duties are performed during GMO tours?
7. What opportunities are available for deployment?

Thank you for your time.

You might find folks a little reluctant to go into all this for the nth time, as this stuff has been gone over again and again.

My recommendation would be to click on the Search link above, then select Advanced Search. Use specific search terms after restricting the forum to Military Medicine. You'll find lots of discussion on search terms like Ranger, Combatatives, GMO, and Deployment.

Read through the results and it will answer 95% of your questions better than folks could rehash here. If you still have specific questions, why don't you come back and post them?

NDY gave the best advice you'll find, but I just wanted to add that if you find an internship anywhere that allows you to do any or all of what you listed, then I would very much like to know about it.

It's quite possible, as long as you substitute Suicide Prevention training for Ranger training, Sharps Disposal for rifle training, and fighting for the last cup of coffee in the pot instead of hand-to-hand combat.

You really need to rethink your interest in military medicine. It sounds to me like you'd be better off joining the military for a bit, doing ranger school or something, and then getting out and going to med school as a second career. Signing HPSP in an effort to get to do "military stuff" and "medical stuff" is a mistake in my opinion as you end up really doing neither.

Since you are already in med school, then joining the infantry now might be a mandatory disqualification for AOA. However, if you became a physician for SOCOM and serve with Rangers or SF, then you can make the case that you need to go to snake-eating school. It can be done. You may want to contact SOCOM medical dept and let them know you are an interested med student.

Just following up on this one: Does anyone here have experience with this? Additionally, is it at all possible to take HPSP and upon completion of medical school, delay residency for other military activities? Thank you all for your responses thus far.
